OT: American Politics

The 250%-390% only kicks in when the sales exceed a certain number, which they never will because Canadians like drinking Canadian milk,
Until the number is reached, the tariff remains at zero.

As usual, this "unfair" deal was negotiated by.......Trump.

Just like the fentanyl garbage, this dairy stuff is 100% contrived bullshit to give Trump a pretext to attack us. Most US dairy doesn’t even meet our food standards anyway, so we never import enough of it to hit the quotas where those tariffs would start.

And I have to say—there have been a number of politicians over the years who’ve tried running on getting rid of Canada’s supply management for dairy. Maxime Bernier is the most recent one I can think of, back when he was running for the CPC leadership against Andrew Scheer and hadn’t fully gone mask-off as a fascist loon.

Holy hell though—is it ever a good thing that, in our present situation, we aren’t wholly dependent on the US to supply us with staple foods like milk, eggs & cheese.

If the people who wanted to kill supply management had their way, the US and their huge market and heavily government-subsidized farmers would have rolled over and crushed our own domestic dairy industry. And we’d be begging the US for their shitty, hormone-filled dairy products.

Mexico allowed US dairy in more or less unopposed and its been terrible for their domestic dairy farmers. chase for the bottom. Mexico's saving grace has been traditional domestic products that US producers don't make as well as Mexican's historically being very driven to buy as local or regional as possible because shipping is such a pain in the ass there.
