Goaltending

I now understand why Rutherford always drafted a goaltender…
But aside from Cam Ward none of them worked out either. His last draft was 2013. These are the goalies he drafted and the games played. Some of them never even played in the organization.

Daniel Altshuller
Collin Olsen
Matt Mahalak
Frederik Andersen - no, he doesn’t count
Mike Murphy - 2 games for the Canes
Justin Peters - 68 games for the Canes, 15 for other teams
Magnus Akerlund
Kevin Nastiuk
Cam Ward - 668 games for the Canes, 33 for the Blackhawks
Rob Zepp - 10 games for the Flyers, NHL debut at 33 years old
Daniel Boisclair
Craig Kowalski
Antti Jokela
Chris Madden
Aaron Baker
JS Giguere - 8 games for the Whalers, 589 for other teams

So you gotta draft them but you also gotta pick better ones.

Yep. And sometimes you never know. I was disappointed that Yaroslavl Askarov was picked 2 spots ahead of the Canes in the 2020 draft. I don’t know if he was on Waddell’s list or not, but at 13, he took Seth Jarvis. And Askarov has only played 16 NHL games since coming to the US in 2022, only 4 more than 5th rounder Jakub Dobes has played.

At the other end of the spectrum, Connor Hellebuyck was drafted in the 5th round. Igor Shesterkin was drafted in the 4th round. Logan Thompson and Bob weren’t drafted. Henrik Lundqvist was drafted in the 7th round.

Honestly, you have to give Jimmy and his staff credit for identifying and drafting NHL talent in Andersen and Giguere even if they never really factored for the organization (until much later in Andersen's case). Hitting on 3 long term starters (including Ward) in 15 or 16 goalie selections isn't too bad, really. Especially when you consider how tricky drafting that position is for everybody and how few scouting resources Rutherford had.

As for the near misses, there was a lot of chatter about the Canes having interest in both Askarov and Spencer Knight and both went relatively close to where the Canes had picks. Neither are completely developed for differing reasons, but they both absolutely are NHL caliber goaltenders.

Where it seems to me like the Canes have been light is in college. There's a pretty strong trend towards college keepers and Carolina's only real foray into that talent pool was pure happenstance when they decided to give Parets a contract after scouting other players at Qunnipiac. At this point just pick your a favorite from the US development program and grab one every other year until you hit on a good one. Something. This fishing around in the murky depths of the Russian system ain't getting it done.

Jack LaFontaine says hello. Murky depths? The Canes drafted 3 goalies in 2021; Patrik Hamrla, Nikita Quapp and Yegor Naumov. Yeesh.

Hellebuyck, Oettinger, Swayman, Lindgren came out of college.

My buddy Mike Salmon (Raleigh underground rock god) has a kid that is an outstanding goalie doing his high school playing with Nichols School up in Buffalo. He's got a pretty good stat line right now. Kai Salmon.

He’ll be 18 next month, making him eligible for the 2025 Draft.

LaFontaine is an exception in Carolina's goalie program, not the rule. And there's always a risk that guys will hit their ceiling before they turn pro ... or at a lower pro level. He at least had some success in college, which indicates that there was solid logic behind the selection. This is why I hate getting into detailed discussions about goaltending development. The hit rate is so low and everybody's idea of success is different. It's so easy to just focus on the hits and say "just do that over and over again" but most of the time if the guy turns out to be of any account at all then I consider him a hit ... so long as the draft position wasn't too high or something

But I do think you can read trends and right now, Canadian junior isn't producing pro goalies in the quantities they used to while American colleges are producing more pro goalies than they used to. Europe is a wildcard and requires some sort of scouting advantage, same as always.

We really need to home growna better goalie very hard to get one in a trade and right now the free agent class looks pretty terrible..
