2025 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

Which is why I said “Not sure who the Habs equivalent of DeShields ”

As for Lansing, one area of “prospect strength” is LD…

Perhaps the solution is packaging Matheson + 1st for that 2C .. but again don’t know how much MM has increased his market perception / value with his growth in play this season, nor who the 2C target would be
I would drive MM to the airport . . .

The more I think about it, I’ve come to believe Habs are at the point where they need to pull off their equivalent of a Delino DeShields for Pedro Martinez type deal the Expos executed to address that high end 2C missing element

For those unaware, Mtl media & fans were furious when the deal was announced… in hindsight it was tremendous player evaluation by GM Dan Duquette at the time - DeShields was traded at his peak value, and Pedro was an immensely undervalued asset.

Not sure who the Habs equivalent of DeShields is Slaf? Caufield? Guhle?

Nor who that Pedro equivalent is?
Reinbacher or Mailloux?

We have a lot of options, so I would avoid is moving Suzuki and the youth core that is expected to propel the team. It’s not yet robust enough for us to sacrifice pieces:

F: Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Demidov
D: Hutson, Guhle, Reinbacher
G: Fowler

Anyone else or any pick can go.

I would prefer not to move Heino, Kapanen, Hage, Struble, and Engstrom. Maybe Beck, but not sold. But if the return is sufficient, any of them could go.

Well sure, I'd love to swing a trade for a franchise/HOF player for a utility player as well. That trade is closer to the Pederson/Neely deal equivalent in hockey.

We don't really have the same equivalent on our team. Guhle and Caufield might be the closest but they're big part of our team. On a lesser level, I'm sure Xhekaj carry some value for some teams, but it would be for an unproven prospect, similar to Martinez at the time, but even less so.

Delino was not a utility player at the time. But he burned out quickly after leaving the Expos. I’m leaning more toward a Galarraga for Kenny Hill type trade.

I guess the real question is have any of the “core” peaked & is this the best time to really leverage that market value?

Sure, I just meant that while he was very good, he wasn't unreplaceable.
In hindsight yes but that wasn’t the universal view at the time of the deal - Melnick went on a tirade on radio as did Tevan.

Lansing was some shtick that was discovered by Felipe playing semipro in Fla

The universal view was Expos got robbed ..

I hated that trade when it was an announced. That’s why I’m not a baseball GM. Pedro might be the best pound for pound pitcher ever. Him, Koufax or Guidry (yes, Guidry, who weighed 155 lbs.)

Señor Plunk was so awesome. How many times did I see a RH batter bail on some junk, only to see it catch the inside part of the plate. Filthy, filthy stuff.

The same people make the same noises about the Randy Johnson for Mark Langston trade, which only looks bad in hindsight because of what Johnson became. But it's a disingenuous argument.

In the entire history of the Expos that trade was perhaps the only one that was done for the purpose of winning NOW instead of forever doing things that were designed to (hopefully) pay off 5 years down the road. In 1989 the Expos were chasing a pennant and Langston was the best left hander in the majors. Johnson at that time was a nobody and he wasn't going to help them win anything that season.

And we all know that once Johnson got good he still wouldn't have been an Expo. They never could have kept him.

Funny part of the Langston deal - it was Gene Harris & Brian Holman who Sea desperately wanted, RJ was a throw in. Dombrowski only added Harris because that’s what it took to avoid the Mets from making the deal.

ironically, Pedro’s slight frame is the only reason we were able to trade for him. The Dodgers thought he was going to be perpetually injured.

He was amazing in his limited action as a Dodger but struggled with injuries…. Even tho I liked Delino, I was intrigued by Pedro.

The first time I saw Pedro pitch, I was immediately smitten and soon after I was at the Big Owe when he ruined his perfect game in the 8th inning by hitting a guy and then got smacked in a bench clearing brawl for his trouble.

DeShields was a fan favorite, ton of personality, good player, fast, but numbers were good but not mind blowing. And Pedro was a relief pitcher at the time of the trade. Optics were not good.

Ironically that was Koufax’s assessment to GM Fred Claire

Just throw 15-20 sheets at Duchene , 2C is solved
