Habs ran out of gas.

Will Carolina be resting anyone on Wednesday?

Also, why would you want Columbus in? Habs match up better with Washington.

No official word but all indications are, yes. We've been resting 1 forward (Hall, Staal, Martinook) a game for a while now, wouldn't surprise me if it were 4 resting and maybe also a D on Wednesday. Would need to call up a couple replacements to make that happen though; not that many healthy scratches right now but we'll see if that happens tomorrow.

You guys have nothing to play for Wednesday. You're locked in, a desperate team could lead to injuries. I've seen it happen before.

The Habs are gassed. Remember that at Christmas they were third last in the league. They've been pushing this a long time and it's caught up to them.

I still think they squeak in though. Columbus needs to win in regulation both games and Philly is playing tough lately.

I'm not sure the Canes will rest more than Gostisbehere (hurt) and one regular forward (TBD). It will help the Habs that Kochetkov wll be in goal, he has been a disaster over the past couple of weeks. And the Canes have been a complete mess on the road.

I do expect the Canes to load manage the lineup....ie Slavin is not going to play 25 minutes and Aho might not go 20 minutes for example. But we don't have enough extras to take more than just 1 regular forward out of the lineup just for rest.

As for who I think is more likely to beat the Caps (Columbus vs. Montreal), I think both teams are equally likely to beat the Caps. And I think that both teams have almost a 50/50 chance to beat Washington. Then again, I still haven't been able to figure out how the Caps had as good a regular season as they did.

I don't have a preference who makes WC2....Columbus has the Gaudreau tragedy to rally for....Montreal is Montreal, and Montreal is Hockey. It's good for Canada to have teams in the playoffs and Montreal with all of the history and Cups being in the playoffs I think is good for the NHL.

Yea. Have no problem with Montreal (my roots are from they’re afterall) getting in, I was just poking fun at habsy 😉 But I’m leaning toward Columbus because of Johnny Hockey

Caps getting bounced in round one would be glorious...that fan base has become one of the most annoying overall and they seem to think that everything that asshat Tom Wilson does is great at every turn.

Montreal and Columbus both could pull the upset, and both of those teams have more than enough talent to easily win four games against that Caps team that has somewhat overachieved all year long and never really faced much adversity.

Carolina has been absolutely terrible lately in games where they have no real stakes, FWIW. Hard to see them bringing a big effort against Montreal (or Ottawa) unless they've set their sights on 100 points or something.

Washington just hasn't gotten the kind of goaltending over the last month or so that makes you feel comfortable going into the playoffs. Neither has Carolina, to be honest. Stuff happens and somebody could get hot in net for either team, but those are both teams with a hard ceiling IMO.

Counterpoint - sometimes teams that have to be in "playoff mode" for months just to climb the hill and get in the door flame out quickly once the party starts. Either one "could" beat the Caps... I wouldn't call it "easily" at all. Anyone hear anything about Logan Thompson's health? I think that may determine a whole bunch.

Washington has more to be concerned about beyond Thompson's health. His form over the second half of the season has been average or worse.

But you're spot on about the wild card grinders. Sometimes it works out just right (Carolina in 2019 for example), but most of the time they get to the promised land all worn out from the chase. Still, it wouldn't surprise me at all if one of the Eastern wild card teams gets out of the 1st round ... especially if we end up with Washington/Columbus and Toronto/Ottawa. Those are just really awkward matchups for the higher seeds.

BTW, if you need a chuckle on Tax Day, do a quick search for Mark Messier's rambling prescription for how to fix the Rangers on ESPN. I can't figure out if Mess completely lacks self awareness or if his ego is just so big that his self awareness is powering the universe. Leadership, identity, culture ... and my favorite, body language. That's the ticket. He probably thinks they need to re-hire Torts. He DEFINITELY thinks they need to hire him as GM.

Counter counter point: sometime teams that bolt out ahead of the pack can’t get into playoff gear soon enough in the first round, like Tampa in 2019 and and the Bs in 2023.
