2nd Rnd '25 Playoffs: Leafs vs Panthers - Flo-Rida them onto the ECF - LFG!

I want to know who Marner was yelling at. Who they thought the passengers were. I’m wondering if they could’ve possibly been aiming at Nylander.

Willy has to be better, but dragging Tavares and Holmberg to anything but failure would have been fucking herculean. Literally no one to play with who functions offensively at 5v5.

Why do we want to pay Mitch anything remotely close to his market value at all though? He's a huge reason we've underachieved in big games over the last 7 years. Small, soft, pass first/only winger who plays a style that requires him to hang onto the puck a lot. Let's just cut the cord and move on.

What has Boeser done? Not a whole lot, but the last time he was in the playoffs he scored almost as many goals in 12 games (7) as Mitch has scored in his last 49 (8). Standing at the half board and passing towards the net isn't going to win playoff series. Scoring goals does. Bennett was more valuable in this series than Marner and similar to Boeser has as many goals in his last 2 playoffs runs (13) as Mitch has in his entire career.

and we can probably get both for about the price of one Mitch. I don't fucking care how many assists Mitch gets. We've seen more than enough about how easily it is to make him go missing when the games get physical.
I don’t disagree, but I also don’t know if I agree either. Maybe reforming the cast around the big 3 is the way, and that creates the room Marner needs to excel. It feels like sticking with this shit stands a better chance of paying off than ditching this guy. Or not. It’s probably a disaster either way if Matthews isn’t what we thought he would be.

At his worst, Matthews was as good or better than Barkov in this series, who Florida has built a winner and contender around. You can win with that guy. You can't win with a winger who is allergic to the middle of the ice and makes game changing plays like his game 5 spinorama bail out to avoid a hit. There's no upside to betting on Marner. Even at his absolute best he's still very much a soft perimeter player. 8 goals in his last 49 playoff games is some Calle Jarnkrok type shit. Let someone else bet 13 million on that getting better.

It all sucks so much. One fucking win in a game 7, just once, and they couldn’t fucking do it to save themselves. I can’t believe I thought it’d be different this time.

The other shitty thing about getting rid of Marner is that I think it’ll piss off and alienate Matthews. And if he’s the guy we’re still going to build everything around, don’t we risk having him say fuck this team and want out? I think that’s where this goes.

They have him locked up for three more seasons. If they can't win by the time his contract is up then hopefully they don't fuck up the asset management the same way they did with Mitch.

I mean i have no idea if this is true, but if it is it says way more about Matthews as the same brand of loser that Marner is.

Also, you cant possibly factor this kind of thing in anymore.

Friedman is reporting that Berube might have alot of sway over how the roster looks going into the offseason. Leaning into his system and getting players better equip for it seems like it could be a terrible idea

I think we'll have some clarity about what the direction of the org is within the week. Shanny is the big question right now. Whether Shanny's replacement is a hockey guy or purely a front office guy, who is making Hockey Ops decisions, etc.

Or a Shanny extension

Or some sort of non hockey man and a promotion for the Tree

If Berube sets the direction, he’s busy saying the problem is mental, which leads me to believe that he’d prefer to keep the band together and try to drill in the right mindset.

Zero chance. Some of these dudes are fucking dead inside.

Marner is the sort of guy where the only way he wins is if there is literally no pressure where he is and his surrounding cast is everything he isnt.

Hard to see Tre not coming back but it would definitely be a bold move if the incoming Pres immediately named a new GM.
