2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Unloading Nylander for that mythical #1 d is and signing Mitch just feels like a better option for me.

Again, trading the 9th best playoff goal scorer in the world and paying 13 million to keep the 158th best is a brutal, brutal idea.

Mitch has played his way out of town, full stop. There's no good asset management arguement that includes making him one of the top 5 highest paid players in hockey. You're not getting a top 3-5 defender in the world for Nylander. Let's worry about assembling a roster with the best shot of winning a cup as we can manage. Every summer we hear stories about how teams are looking to move salary and can't find takers, there are opportunities to find replacements and improvements with a big bucket of cap space.

I get it. But I think you're underestimating how hard it will be to build an elite team in the short-term after losing Marner for nothing. But maybe that's not the goal. I get it. I just appreciate asset management. And running it back with a #1d (that granted, may not exist) instead of Willy could be interesting. They've never tried that yet.

Byram, York and Andersson are interesting to me. None should be that expensive. All would add offensive:transition skill to the blue line.

Dobson obviously, but he’s expensive.

From a "let's not waste Matthews' prime perspective, losing Marner for nothing and then having to fill that aav with no assets to trade and a shit free agent class... Not quite ideal. Unloading Nylander for that mythical #1 d is and signing Mitch just feels like a better option for me. They would be trying something they've never done; go into next year year with a horse d. Mack never won shit pre Makar and was considered a disappointing choker. McDavid without Bouchard wasn't the same either.

But I'm pretty much convinced Marner wants out so it's all moot.
Marner is the obvious problem with us if there is one, so losing Nylander and doubling down on Marner would be the worst path forward imo.

centre scoring:

Barkov 2gls 5pts +2 ---- Matthews 1gls 4pts +0
Bennett 3gls 4pts -2 ---- Tavares 2gls 2pts -4
Lundell 2gls 5pts +6 -- Domi 2gls 5pts +2
Nosek 0gls 1pts +3 ----- Laughton 0gls 0pts -4
Sturm 0gls 0pts -1 ------ Kampf 0gls 0pts -2

Yes....but still, we had 5 forwards do not just poorly, but do almost nothing.

Holmberg: 12 GM, 0G 1A, 47.4xG 33.3gf%
McMann: 13GM, 0G, 3A, 37.6%xG 44.4gf%
Laughton: 13GM, 0G, 2A, 32.3%xG 28.6gf%
Lorentz: 13GM, 0G, 2A, 33.9%xG 30.0gf%
Jarnkrok: 12GM, 0G, 1A, 36.6%xG 20.0gf%

I mean, people are thinking a bit too hard in trying to decode Auston's "passengers" comment.

Woll put up an .886

That's terrible however you want to slice it. Bob wasn't great, but was good enough for them to win with.
Woll was hung out to dry with bad team D , sure he could of made a few extra saves but wasnt your bigger problem

Leafs scored 6 goals in last 4 games , your winning squat averaging a buck 50 a night

I mean I don't want to bring anyone back. But if I'm trying to build a competitive team for next year, which I should be trying to do while I have Matthews, I can't just dump them all. And of course I'd explore dangling Willy for a d that they've lacked for the past decade just to see what's available.

But I don't think Mitch wants to come back so it's moot probably.

Yeah, no.

Game 3 is all that you need to watch. Leafs go up 2-0 and are dominating, Barkov bounces a puck in off of Woll from below the goal line. The Leafs show uncharacteristic fight back and score on the PP to go up 3-1, and Woll's shit rebound control on a soft shot somehow causes the puck to end up behind him and in the net, 3-2

Florida scores on a 2 on 1 to tie it...not on Woll at all, was shambolic D. But then allows this:

Should have had 3 of the goals scored in this game and the team kept fighting back and just never got a save from him. .886 isn't lying about his performance overall.
