2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

eh I'm pretty sure we're gonna resign Tavares and it will be close to or exactly market value. and I am gonna be grumpy about it.

sure, for $3m, bring him back to be a 2nd line winger and PP merchant. but not much more and not as a 2C

It’s not about owing. It’s about wanting to stay and make the most of the next couple of years after just having made $77m USD.
He sounds like the people who claimed Giordano would never take less than 3m a few years ago. Then he did. If Tavares wants to stay it'll be a substantial discount and it sure sounds like he doesn't want to move his family elsewhere.

I mean he still is a 2C though if this past season is any indication, just a complete empty bitch in key playoff games.

There are alot of teams that are naked in the C hole that would love him for a couple years until a kid is ready.

Whereas Marner is posturing himself to make some serious $$$$$$$. Tavares is just admitting he has zero leverage and has little appetite moving elsewhere. And yes of course we should want them to sign a cheap Tavares.

As if making $1m or $2m more even enters into the calculus at age 35 if getting the chance to stay put with your home team after already making a fortune.

Wasnt Giordano in that last year kinda cooked?

Tavares is going to have way more interest league wide

To be clear, i think he stays, but in the 5-5.5 range, which is still a huge paycut with the cap going up. His market could be north of 8-9.

Models had that gio contract as one of the best value deals in the modern era. Whether he was cooked after that is besides the point. He was still considered a very good top 4 d when he signed the deal. And he just accepted playing for free. It happens sometimes.

He has plenty of leverage in terms of competing offers, but he’s admitting he doesn’t care to use it.

There's almost no Cs available so he can cash-in big-time. John is very likeable. Most people would not have handled giving-up the C like he did(And it was a worthless move anyways)

If Tavares wanted, I don’t doubt that someone would give him a deal somewhere in between what O’Reilly and Stamkos got from Nashville. 3 years, around $7M per season likely.

And obviously, if they even offer him a contract at all, the Leafs shouldn’t give him anything even close to that.

And the market is hella weak, especially at C

Matthews says he's going to keep his injury to himself. But he got hurt in training camp. And with time off he's confident he'll be fine next year.

Maybe should have shut him down all season eh

If Tavares takes $3m and Knies ends up with $7m, we’re getting both for less than Tavares’ current salary, and Marner’s salary, and the cap increase to get at least two good players. (Or Marner again).

If Marner leaves, find two good guys to take 1year deals like Domi and Bertuzzi the other year, just much better players than them ideally, and see what happens. Then ditch them and go all out for McDavid the next year.

That’s the only smart plan if walking away from Marner.

I still want a team based on speed and skill. Johnny cannot keep up. but yeah, he had a good regular season. then disappeared again per usual against the Panthers.

This is the first year that Matthews has flat out refused to say what his injury was after the season has completed. Gay
