2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

I'll use this as an example. If they had counted on conference finals in "plan" this year and said they would average 3 home games per series, that's 9 games. They only got 7 home games this time around. Assuming 2 conference final games would average $1250 per person in stadium that is a $50,000,000 shortfall.

I get it. I was kidding.

Oh without question, but just because they are shit doesnt mean the other two arent also shit.

Well, Tre is probably 1 more failure of a season away from being fired as well and fwiw, there's not a 0% chance that Tre actually does some net good this summer and we end up making an ECF. He has a bag of cap, not a whole lot of noticeable holes on the team to fill, and the worst 2 playoff performers of the core 4 (5 of you count Mo) are out of contract.

Well I mean they’re about to lose their leading scorer, might lose their 2nd line c/2nd highest goal scorer and lack a #1 d. So sure they don’t have a lot of holes to fill.

I'm not in love with Tre, but putting aside the subjective stuff, no one can objectively say the guy didn't do a good job when the goaltending and D were significantly improved (without breaking the bank) and his team had its third highest finish in the history of the franchise and the furthest this core has gone in the postseason.

That stuff gets a raise and promotion, not a demotion or firing, regardless that game 7 wasn't won or was lost 6-1 instead of 2-1 like the last couple of game 7s. And again, I'm not any big defender of the guy.

I guess I am in the minority when I say that I am thoroughly disgusted with the financial greed that these game players exhibit. Sure, I understand that their careers may not be long but it seems these payoffs are way out of hand? I mean 7/8 mil or 10/12 mil per season?? How about a simple (and very generous) 2 mil/ yr (after tax)? Thats not enough to live comfortably on?? How about stop pandering to all these "super stars" and start helping out the fan base who can't even hope to see a game or buy merch because of the extreme costs? Might help make the game more enjoyable once again.

Whats even more disgusting is that with all the pandering and media focus these people probably think they somehow are deserving of these ridiculous payoffs. Just gross. It is just a game after all.

Would much rather the money go to the players than the owners

gonna be hard to come out ahead talent wise. Rantanen was the chance at that but yeah.

We're going to have a pretty significant difference of opinion if we're referring to Mitch Marner as "their leading scorer" and worrying about how we're going to replace him.

The team isn't in the place it's in because of regular season performance.

To put your points a different way: They're about to lose 2 forwads who combined for 2 points (both scored by Mitch fwiw) in the 5 playoff games we played this year that were games 5-6-7 of a series. Fwiw again, Max fucking Domi had 4 points in those 5 games.

In every game 5-6-7 combined since Tavares arrived in Toronto, Mitch and JT have combined for 15 points total in those games. 3 goals. 20 fucking games we needed to win and 22 million dollars annually got us 3 goals over 7 years. We're not losing anything. We're gaining the ability to not have a 22 million dollar void in our playoff lineup.

I seem to look at it different than most everyone here, and yeah I don't trust Treliving to make the smartest decisions available to us for the money available, but I look at the bottom 6's we roll out every year in the playoffs to get caved the fuck in and I don't know how much of a hit to overall roster talent we're taking by replacing Mitch with a ~8 million dollar winger and then going and getting an actually good 2/3C instead of thinking that Scott Laughton is a good idea at the deadline because our 3C slot is that fucking grim looking.

Yeah, we're not going to replace regular season Marner with 1 guy. That's fine though.

Yeah, I can't believe that in 2025th year of our lord we're still talking about this. Billionaires and Multi Billion dollar corporations that own the teams are going to charge exactly as much money as they can get away with and if the players made less money, the billionaire owners would just keep more. Ticket prices would remain the same. Shut up, drink your 27 dollar 16oz IPA and enjoy the game, pleb.

50/50 split between players and owners seems fair on it's face and seems to work from a business standpoint towards the future growth and stability of the league.

That puck moving D you want?

I doubt it
I like his track record with building and that has some offense and puck movement.

He got weeger out of the Florida trade...he likes to have some bigger guys for sure but Tanev was needed first for these leafs. Mcabe was here already.
He went for klingberg, and OEL.

He thought Reilly could maybe do it...but it was a fail again.

That's why I think he trades Reilly and maybe gets a PMD in a trade or he goes hybrid and gets Ekblad

Definitely don't add Matthews and Nylander's 5-6-7 stats to the mix since those would make it the situation seem so much rosier.

for me it's the stupidity that grinds me, not so much the selfishness.

the players deserve whatever they can get. i don't care.

but how some of these guys don't realize that sacrificing literally 10% of their basic salary could potentially result in an entire lifetime of love and affection (and the resulting money in endorsemennts and post career earnings) and a career of less pressureversus an entire lifetime of being reviled and under constant overwhelming pressure.....it's just crazy to me.
