OT: American Politics

No one's voting for Steve Bannon. They're voting for the guy that has always appealed to many people (that's how you become a celebrity) and one of the biggest, most successful self-promoters of all-time. America was always ripe for a charismatic fascist leader like him to sweep people off their feet. Fascism was never enough though. You need the personality to go along with it. And here we are.

No one took him serious politically until he got super racist with the Obama birth certificate bit. No one.

True he only became famous for his personality and had a hit TV show that was built around him showing his personality. But it was the birth certificate thing that people gravitated too. Are you ok?

If you ask me, I think he has the personality of a vomit. He's a piece of shit obviously. But my opinion doesn't matter on this one. The facts and the events up until this point speak for themselves. I don't like it either but I don't deny it it either. This is wild.

Different times obviously....but do you believe that Jesus Christ was truly that magnetic, or did a bunch of people use him to build a power base?

...that's my feeling here. If Rupert Murdoch doesn't pick him out he is just another dummy.

Except that's not what I said....I said that no one gave a shit about his politics until he went after Obama's birth certificate.

I think you're massively over estimating the reach and celebrity he had within the broader context of society. He had a TV show that was a hit once upon a time....but settle down

You keep pretending that he was some fucking phenomena before he got into politics and it just isn't true. He was a B list personality at best. A sideshow who was at least as well known for a string of very public bankruptcies and business failures as he was for being a reality TV star.

I think you're deeply misunderstanding the source of his popularity.

I think a key component of why it worked was his already existing popularity and fanbase, which he built from being an ordinary dime a dozen businessman and nothing else. But his perceived "blue collar" personality and ability to grift/self promote has always been a dangerous combination and was ultimately the reason he was always Trump; it wasn't the business bit, he was not even that rich. Plenty of fascist movements have been attempted but failed throughout history. It takes a personality like this to gain as much support as he has. And I didn't think this was a particularly controversial thing to say tbh. Surprised at this reaction.

Oh so it wasn't that clip of him talking about running for president on the Oprah show in the 80s with the audience glowing and ooing and awwing. Come on. This is just weird. Now we're on to the "this talentless mediocre business man got low ratings by the end of his run on his television show" arguments. He had a TV show on a major network. You know who gets tv shows on major networks? People with personalities that audiences gravitate too.

This is bizarre. Come on.

Guy who's famous for buying buildings and telling everyone how great he is gets 14 seasons of a stupid ridiculous premise of a show on major television network. But no. Not an endearing personality.

He very famously, very famously, has ever really only had one person who called him a friend(wonder what happened to that guy....) but yes, tell me more about his "endearing personality".

He's a walking, talking charicature of the 80's wall street douche. He has charisma and an endearing personality in the same way Steven Segall does. Everything you're saying about Trump short of the Presidential run can be ported over to a bunch of horrible famous douchebags. How can be famous if not likeable?

It's really not that hard. Through out history, angry people love being given permission to fucking hate. Hitler was a deeply maladjusted and angry art nerd who was entirely incapable of forming personal relationships until he stood in front of crowds at a bar and started screeching about the treaty of versailles and the jews. All of a sudden, he was "charismatic".
