2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

heh. keep the dream alive!

said this before but I could definitely see 97 doing a farewell tour year in Toronto. still possible he wears the Leaf one day.

McDavid is for the Oilers what Marner wanted but never got to be with the Leafs: the guy who essentially decides what goes or doesn't go. The Oilers don't make a move without 97's approval. He runs the team. Hes not going anywhere.

My default expectation is that McDavid’s going to re-sign. But it will still be fun to watch your quiet desperation steadily increase the longer he goes without re-signing.

No desperation here. If he does decide to leave it wont be to fulfill his childhood dream of playing for the Leafs. McDavid wants a Cup and the Oilers are better situated for winning one than the Leafs will ever be. Why go from a team that went to back to back finals to one that can barely make it past one round?

If he leaves it will be to chase a Cup in a tax free jurisdiction where Cups are near guarantees. He'll be a Panther, a Lightning, or a Star before he'll ever be a Leaf. If you ever see 97 in Toronto he'll be pushing 40 and he wont be leading anyone to anywhere. He'll just be playing out the string and ticking a box.

Your assumption is that McDavid's next destination is Toronto. My question is how delusional do you have to be to think that a guy as driven to succeed as McDavid would waste his time with the shit show in Hogtown.

In case you haven't noticed, the Leafs are no longer a team on the rise. They are slowly but surely on the down slope. They've lost Marner for nothing and, soon enough, Matthews will be gone too. McDavid isnt stupid. He has eyes. The Leafs are a dog with fleas now. They arent competing for anything.

I've no doubt that shoul things go sideways in Edmonton, McDavid will be leaving. But he wont be going to a Canadian team. Not while he's still elite. He wants to win and that's never happening in Toronto. Your window is closing.

The best part is that he thinks the Oilers minus McDavid are better than the Leafs. Makes me laugh every time.
Let's just say they're no worse since they play in a less competitive division. Moving from the Oilers to the Leafs is not an upgrade. You're no closer to a Cup. When was the last time the Leafs were one or two wins away from a championship? Or even 4 wins away?

Time to face the unpleasant truth. The Leafs are regressing, not ascending. They cant even get out of their own division, let alone compete for the Cup.
