The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

I look at it the opposite way tbh - there's zero chance we're near this bad next year with any halfway competent GM/Coach in charge, so this is our one and only chance to get ourselves an elite draft pick anytime soon.

Yeah, I’m on that same page.

Like I said, I firmly believe we would have to have incompetent management and coaching, plus bad luck in other key areas, for our pick in 2027 or 2028 to be anywhere close to as bad as this year’s.

So I’m all in on wanting to keep this year’s pick, even if that removes the protection from our next two picks.

Like this is potentially our chance to add our Makar.

Yeah, the ping pong balls will decide. Can't pass on McKenna at the 1 if we win the lottery though. But sure, Reid or Carels at the 2 for sure. Whichever of the 5 top prospects falls to us if we keep our 5 pick is fine though:

Reasonable upside/style of play comparisons:

McKenna: Bedard, Kane, Hughes
Reid: 6'2 version of Makar, Hutson
Carels: 6'2 physical version of Scott Niedermayer
Stenberg: Fiala+, Nylander
Verhoeff: Ekblad, McAvoy

Somewhere, @CH1 is surprised!

Negative. Contending teams often empty out their future arsenal of high picks. Even Tre managed to get a first back for Nic Roy.

Didn’t the great Julien Brisebois trade a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th for something called Tanner Jeannot?

Dubas traded 1st rounders too.

Nobody gives a shit when you trade the 26th pick overall… the mistake the Leafs made was sucking so bad that fans suddenly care about the top of the draft

Top-5 pick Dmen

2025: #1 Schaefer
2024: #2 Levshunov, (#9 Parekh)
2023: #5 Reinbacher
2022: #2 Nemec
2021: #1 Power, #4 L.Hughes, (#6 Edvinsson, #8 Clarke)
2020: #5 Sanderson
2019: #4 Byram, (#6 Seider, #8 Broberg)
2018: #1 Dahlin, (#7 Q.Hughes, #10 Bouchard)
2017: #3 Heiskanen, #4 Makar
2016: #5 Juolevi, (#9 Sergachev)

Even if the leafs are bad now no matter what we have to give up 2 of the next 3 1sts.

Odds are a top 5 pick in a good draft will be the best pick. Not 100% but they’d have to win the lottery to regret keeping the pick.

The ol' Kessel trade argument. Except burke tried to turn a shit team into a good team, and they were still shit. Tre already had a good team, that he likely overvalued last year after being mostly average and getting lucky. Plus he actively made them worse with each and every move.

Sometimes being a gm requires some honest introspection about how good your team is and how capable you are to improve it.

Honestly a basic ass move like firing berube early this year, and I bet their pick is closer to 10-15.

how clearcut #1 was schaefer last year?

Tough to say because of how much time Shaefer missed with injury. The last OHL defender to put up a better PPG was Ellis almost 20 years ago and no one has come close to his 1.29ppg other than that in a long ass time. Chase Reid for example has a 1.03 this year and that's elite for a 17 yr old in the OHL over the last ~15 years. Shaefer was also nearly as young as you can get for his draft class. Misa 6 months older, but with Mitch Marnerish 17 yr old numbers while being a centre.

Here's the problem with taking one of the defenders #1 imo. Reid looks insanely good when you watch him. Makaresque. But yeah, Shaefer's production at the same age is a step and a half better (smallish sample caveat here though). Carels is putting up that level of production, but he's not as offensively toolsy as Reid is and plays more like your true all purpose #1 who does everything rather than the 80-90+ point uber elite NHL PP QB #1. Basically the "concern" with Carels is that the tools to dominate games offensively aren't as obviously there. I think my 6'2 angry Niedermayer comp kind of covers it tbh.

I honestly believe that if they’d fired Berube in late November, this team makes the playoffs.

I tend to look at this as a very good thing if they keep their pick vs sputtering into the playoffs or being a bubble team that just misses. Sometimes a series of moronic choices can add up to the exact thing an organization needs.

May 5th is my game 7 cup finals

His incompetence aside, Tre was hired with the intention to go all in… I don’t think he survives the interview if he tells Shanny, “listen I’ve been looking at some of the advanced analytics, and is it ok if we maybe take a breath, do a quick retool
on D, so we can extend the window and increase our odds in two years and beyond, instead of going all in at the deadline picking up whatever the market makes available”

Tl;dr Tre’s lack of awareness got him the gig
