It would be funny if they just scrapped the "data driven" mandate and decided to react to the Athletic article by picking a fan favorite and making it a PR move. That's very Rogers.

But I still doubt that. Data driven GM should come along with him. I think. And he should be better at this job than Shanahan was, I don't think that would be a difficult task.

Unless the job comes with a living allowance I guess that means Mats is out. I don't know if someone with his career earnings can afford to buy in Toronto right now.

What were Brad Treliving's qualifications?

Experience is gay and overrated and often results in dumbfuck groupthink once you're in the league for 5, 10 years. Having a guy come in with fresh ideas, away from the Toronto media that has rotted so many brains, is a feature not a bug.

But yeah, no idea what Mats thinks about anything really. But I doubt his job description will be much different than Shanny's, who also had no experience with NHL organizations when he was hired.

I just mean outside of legenday leaf status i cant imagine anyone knows what his stance on analytics and data is.
 
Shanny did a lot to bring respectability back to the organization. Having a guy with 20 years experience on the other side and that cares about the state of the organization as a figure head isn’t bad. They know what players need.

But Shannys failure was getting too involved in player personnel decisions and Mats can’t be expected to do that.
 
..again, as a figurehead that understands the market I like Sundin in that role, but he needs to be surrounded by a competent group (and I'm not sure I would trust him to identify and hire the right people).
 
I would have preferred a Gillis type with a clear organizational vision and plan and process. But in the absence of a Gillis, I'm happy that the head of hockey ops is a Sundin type that is more likely to let a GM cook than a guy with GM "experience". That word "experience" tends to be synonymous with shit failure of a GM in hockey circles. They tried that already with Tre. I'm over it.
 
Agreed on experience. Fuck experience. The old boys club losers all have tons of experience building shitty hockey clubs that set their franchises back years or decades.

The right ideas are better than any type experience other than that small handful of people who have implemented good ideas and turned them into success. In absence of that, give me someone with the right ideas and let them run with them.

My only major concern re: Mats is that he's really unlikely to come in and tear this shitty organization down to the studs and rebuild like Gillis would have. There will be a lot of legacy gud pro group think that survives and I'm of the mind that this old school group think is what ended up causing Dubas to go off track so quickly. It takes way longer to change people's minds than it does to just change the people.
