The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

I’m down for hating on the Toronto sports media in general and Steve Simmons in specific. But this is not an apples to apples comparison.

Mehta, before being hired by the Devils, was a current and hugely successful and well-regarded NHL executive & person.

Whereas Chayka is a Wendy’s franchisee who was last seen in the NHL over five years ago, where aside from being a shit GM for a basement-dwelling team was mostly notable for being a greasy shit off the ice and being sanctioned by the league multiple times.

To paint the difference in media reception between the two as just a “Toronto-be-crazy” thing is disingenuous as hell.
Ok fine. What about the media response to the Brad Treliving hire?

I agree it isn't Toronto centric. But it's clearly over the top and completely warped and skewed in favor of horrific gms with a horrendous track record.

C'mon dude. There's a huge difference between a frosty reception from the media and "he's a fraud and a liar" at his opening presser and then pretty much zero questions regarding his approach to fixing the situation here being asked by the media to suss out what he might actually be thinking of doing while in the role they don't think he deserves.

That last part would be way too much like journalism for our media in Toronto.

Simmons is a joke and that wasn’t actually a question but more of a judgement

However, I also think Pelley could have addressed it during his opening statement “we are aware of the history and so we doubled down on our due diligence and came away incredibly satisfied and optimistic blah blah blah”

I didn't watch the Mehta presser but I heard clips of him talking about analytics and roster construction philosophy, and how poker helps a gm.

The New Jersey media is just better than the Toronto media who didn't ask one interesting question. We learned nothing, because the Toronto media sucks and is just looking to grind axes.

Pelley sucks at talking, but for me his job today wasn't to convince the media that they are wrong. He was never going to do that. The verdict is in. And that's okay. If he hired the right person, it will be obvious to many soon enough.

When have I ever defended the Toronto media love-in for Pizza boy? Every single one of them that supported that hire is an idiot, clearly.

Doesn’t mean that a lot of the criticisms being thrown Chayka’s way and the incredulity at him being the pick aren’t completely valid.

Though I won’t specifically defend Steve Simmons, of course. He sounded completely unhinged.

Yeah but a press conference like that isn't for the media to lob criticisms. Every question was based in the askers opinion that its a bad hire and the Leafs a dumb. Thats just bad journalism.

If thats your aim at least ask interesting questions then criticize the answers. It was a sideshow though, and just did a disservice to Leafs fans who actually want to know what these guys plan on doing. Zero substance.

Yup.

Best thing Chayka can do at this point is make the changes he's already suggested he knows needs to be made, fire Berube and replace him with a better coach like Cassidy, and when we're a 100+ point team again next year take a dignified victory lap.

You can also answer questions you wish you were asked ie if I’m media training these dudes I tell Chayka to insert “looking forward to building an offence first team that will be fun to watch and contend for yrs to come”

No need to surrender 100% of the narrative to the media

I don’t think these guys were properly prepped for today, tbh

That, of course, was the point. The "controversy" is the news they want to push. They're not interested in actual analysis of his ideas.

Yeah the hate-first bias on display by the media there today was pretty disgraceful. Simmons laying into Chayka like that using his own likely fabricated "stories" as a basis is Toronto Sun hack tabloid "reporting"

Use the media as props and share whatever you want with the fans.

I would have loved it if Chayka said the best burger patty is square and how that also applies to zone entries

One of the questions was "you have a full time job out of hockey, do you still know the players"?

Like you're not a GM don't you know all the players? Every fan knows all the players and they have full time jobs. Especially the stats nerds. So dumb.

Yeah Pelley snapped back at that one a little, I think it was Gino Reda/TSN? "He know's the players around the league Gino. Next question"

I don't care how trained or prepped you are, when you have an ambush like that, you're not gonna win. In fact, it's best to say as little as possible and dismiss the ridiculousness rather than over-explain. Just let the results do the talking at this point. Clearly the media hates it, there's nothing you can say to change their mind.

Every question was a variation of "you're shit, John. Keith hired an absolute moron and we are all baffled. Now please talk and when you're done the next media member will say the same thing using different words."

It was one ambushee and really why was Simmons even given one of the 8 questions?
There must be over a hundred reporters who wanted a question
