2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

I heard that last night and I was gobsmacked 😶 He drew first blood in the series and was actually on the ice for Torts. I recall his time with CAR and he was like Bambi caught in headlights— the game just moved too fast for him.
He played their last game against Anaheim too, drawing in for the suspended McNabb.

Simon Nemec has requested a trade from the Devils. He’s coming off his entry deal so the only leverage he has is to play in Europe.

Coghlan may have looked bad in Carolina, but his underlying numbers were always pretty good. And yeah, systems help, but he was never all that bad here as a 7/8 kind of guy after that weird experiment with him as the half-wall shooter on the PP ran out of gas after like three games. That said, he quickly found his level as an AHLer plugging a hole. By that standard, he was fine. Still got that BIG shot, so seeing him scoring a goal on the rush isn’t all that shocking if you ignore the circumstances.

That said, one of the big reasons I don’t trust Vegas to hold off Colorado in the long term is that they’re playing Caughlin and Ben Hutton on their third pairing. That’s not ideal, but they’re also playing McNabb for 25+ minutes and he’s about as basic as they come. Half of that D group is … OK to slightly below OK. Getting Lauzon back makes that, what? Slightly better … kinda. Congrats on getting more than two goals saved above expected from Hart last night, but I’m not lining up to bet on that happening all series.

I forgot to post mortem the Sabres … probably because they’re the Sabres.

So, was this season the arrival of something that’s been building for a while now or was this season a very long hot streak? Hard to say, but I lean to the latter. They’ve got a lot of nice pieces and a real star in Tage Thompson. If Dahlin is going to maintain this level, then they have the star on the back end as well. Cool. They’re also paying a fair amount of money to guys like Norris, Power, Byram and McLeod and I’m never sure what they’re going to bring to the table night to night. Feels to me like they’re going to go ahead and double Tuch’s AAV to keep him and that will basically blow the budget in terms of Cap space, which is a skinny $12 million. It also feels to me like they’re pretty satisfied with themselves, based on the fact that they just extended Lind Ruff and they spent the last three days patting themselves on the back. But the Atlantic is a minefield and you can’t count on Toronto and Florida sucking forever … OK, maybe Toronto, but Florida’s gonna bounce back as soon as Barkov hits the ice again. Montreal is already good and will only get better, Detroit won’t step on that rake forever, and Ottawa might just get goaltending all season next time around. I could easily see the Sabres mostly sitting pat this summer and then going right back into the draft lottery next year. And that’s before you even get to the goaltending and the fact that you can’t count on Alex Lyon to save your butts two seasons in a row based on his established track record.

I don’t like this team and don’t like talking about this team, so I’ll leave it there. I’m unconvinced.

I just wish Carolina had gotten more value in that trade when his reputation was at its peak. Otherwise, yup. Bullet dodged.
We got Tim Gleason. Not huge value on the ice, but certainly no slouch behind the bench. OTOH, Belanger’s lack of desire to play here was the gold standard for disinterest before Mikko.

Yeah. If Jimmy Rutherford hadn’t been trying to shore up what he thought was a contender, then he could have just taken a pick or prospect to go with Gleason (the player he REALLY needed) instead of Belanger. He was awful and Jimmy responded by shipping his butt off to Atlanta at the deadline. It was thier only playoff series, but Belanger still managed to look miserable there too. Playing for that jackass Bob Hartley couldn’t have helped. That season was doomed for the Canes.
