Even if you’re an American team, if you’re not one of Bettman’s sunbelt income-tax-free expansion teams, the league does not give two shits about you.

Funny story on that topic—Recently I found some old recordings I’d made of Leaf games in the late aughts, and started watching one out of curiosity. The recording started with a TSN panel discussion, and the topic of discussion du jour kicked off with a clip of a player who’d recently had their brain annihilated with a blind-side massive check directly to the head that knocked them out cold and left them twitching nervelessly on the ice while no penalty was assessed.

Duthie proceeds to ask the panel whether the league should consider banning hits to the head. Bobo—to his immense credit—eloquently argued why these hits needed to be eliminated from the game.

But then he passed off to fellow panel members John Tortorella and Marty Biron, who argued that headshots were a valuable and intrinsic part of the game, you couldn’t possibly eliminate them if you tried and even if you managed to do it, the sport of hockey would then be completely ruined.
 
Also, when a GM does a shit job assembling the roster he can always deflect his incompetence by deciding that the coach was too soft to squeeze everything from the players (who curiously don’t want to win unless they are coerced into it)
 
I didn’t realize Babs refers to himself in the 3rd person but there’s interviews where he actually does it. Narcissistic psychopath. But he’ll “push” the Oil to new heights, even with a plywood cutout in net.

Wouldn't be surprised if ownership applied some pressure here. Our boy is just too nice to make waves. Just another reason for him to leave... come home to God's team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Should have been suspicious from the outset that Shanahan played exactly one season for the Detroit Red Wings after they hired Babcock, then promptly left in the summer for New York and never looked back.
