2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

thought they'd have to give him 6-8 years to get a caphit that low.....though I did expect a caphit that low, so this isn't a shocker imo.

good on Tavares though. He owed us. And he proved that he wasn't bullshitting about toronto and family and all that.

And now he will get actual love from leafs nation for the rest of his career and beyond, which is worth way way more than an extra few million.

If he does commercials, they will be boring as fuck.

Lof was right all along. Wrong about Marner but so right about JT.

Tre was smart to play hardball, Tavares showed his cards early that he had little interest in moving on. Dubas would have paid him 6+ though.
Yup, Tavares back as expected, and took less than even I expected because I thought it would end up at $4.5m or $5m. Love that guy.

Marner, who knows just yet. I had resigned myself to him being gone, but then Tre's comments about them being in talks and that significant movement was needed signaled to me that the only issue is money, not that Marner doesn't want to come back or that the Leafs don't want him back. I think Tre is hedging his bets waiting to see what happens in Florida while Marner is leveraging his pending UFA status and rumors of wanting to go to get the Leafs nervous in the meantime. If the Panthers guys resign, watch the Leafs and Marner reengage.

JT will likely make up the $$ difference in the coming years as a fan favourite, exponentially moreso if he ascends to god status with a Cup ring.
He is still close to a point a game player. Glad to have him back. And even more glad to have him at this price.

You are the only one of us that think that he could be coming back. You are hereby given permission to gloat should that happen.

Treliving did a better job than I thought he would on the contract. Used properly JT could still help them but that's not going to be at 2C.
It will be next season and maybe even the one after, maybe not so much the last two.

But that's not to say they shouldn't get another top 6 center, and at that point who cares who is technically the 2C and 3C.

I do love how much a habs fan like Lebrun has really showed his ass over the last year.

Fucking habs fans just can't admit their leafs hate us their driving hockey passion.

I've tried hard to avoid thinking about their options with Marner gone but this makes me feel a bit better. Wonder if they still go after Granlund or some mediocre trash like that.

John Tavares has been a fan favourite since he signed, yeah nerd twitter/athletic were hard on him in recent years…..but that was still very vocal minority overall.

He left $2m per on the table to sign with us originally, and left probably just as much on the table AAV wise this time around.

Tavares is a true blue Toronto Maple Leaf to his core, and when we hoist the Cup, few will deserve it as much as him.

also enjoyed how much his statement about returning read like a fuck you to Mitch, even if that would never be John’s intention.

Looking at puckpedia to see his deal listed, and man, it looked bad already with Matty and Willy literally the only guys with 3 years or more left on their deals. At least having Tavares on there again now provides some relief. But yeah, let's get Knies long term now, and then start adding some forwards.

If Marner leaves and the Panthers stay, I don't mind Tre doing what he did a couple years ago and just give out one year deals to guys like Granlund with a bit of overpay if they can't get a long term deal they like, and then just go after McDavid balls to the wall next year.
