2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

The NHL not at all shy about trying to fix games. The general consensus last night was that the refs were trying their best to hand that game to the Pens. Good for the Isles for ruining it. Something has to be done about the NHL and it's obvious officiating fiascos. It's worse than professional wrastling
I watched most of that one and honestly didn’t feel like the ice was any more tilted towards Pittsburgh than normal, given the refs usual protection of perceived star players. Otherwise, it was a standard game for the zebras ... bad to incompetent. I don’t know why people who watch hideous officiating all year get surprised when the same guys are also hideous in the playoffs.

I just got an email from the head of sales for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. He's a huge Islanders fan and somehow talked Royal Caribbean into offering a special sales bonus offer tied to the Isles playoff performance. EVERY cruise sale made the day after an Islanders win in the 1st round will get the customer a free bottle of wine from Royal Caribbean's North American sales team.

I mean go Isles ... for this round at least. And that makes me wish I sold Royal Caribbean.

On the reffing, the female broadcaster - don't know her name was praising the refs for letting them play and said it makes for such an entertaining game - this after watching 2 blatent trips get let go.

I get the increased physicality and letting that go to some extent, but a trip is a trip is a trip. That's not letting them decide it on the ice, that's letting someone get away with a cheat. At the least, the broadcasters shouldn't be praising the poor officiating, and there was a lot of it last night.

I get it, but honestly given how awful the officiating is in the NHL on an average night we've gotten to the point that so long as the missed and ignored calls level out in the end, it's better for these idiots to just keep their arms down. I mean, even with the refs VERY reluctant to call anything at all last night, I still saw a number of completely hideous wrong calls. They can't win because they're under huge pressure and they just aren't up to the job.

I agree that NHL officiating is ridiculous. I also believe that conspiracy theories about the league directing officials to favor one team over another are ridiclous.

Agreed. Although I do think that the refs' long held habit of protecting and favoring name brand players makes it FAR too easy to point that finger. Pittsburgh is as good an example as anyone. You can't lay a finger on St Sidney without getting called for something, and he leverages that advantage as much as humanly possible. Likewise, Malkin can get away with pretty much anything that doesn't leave a trail of blood, which he DEFINITELY leverages ... literally. Meanwhile they happen to be playing a team without a single "star" player, and predictably the Islanders get no protection at all. If they get a call, it's generally obvious. So, your basic suspicious person looks at a game in that series and sees the refs leaning towards one team rather openly. They don't even know they're doing it ... they're just "protecting the brand."

And it's been that way in the NHL for as long as I can remember. Star power is what talks when it comes to the officiating in this league and it generally has to be established over time.

While I too believe the NHL directs refs to favor one team over another (imagine the scandal!) I do think the word gets out among the refs to "look out for so-and-so." I think the Canes had 3 embellishment calls against them in a span of 3-4 games this year, which made my head spin.

Not expecting the officiating to suddenly be good, but the broadcasters ought not to be praising the poor officiating as making the game more exciting. Guy drove the net, got his feet, from the waist down completely lifted off the ice by the D, and pushed into the post knocking the net off. Video review to see if puck went in net before goal was knocked off moorings. Broadcasters saying it shouldn't be a goal in any case because of goalie interference - while the guys feet were being lifted 4 feet off the ice he's supposed to be responsible for where he goes...

Personally, I'd string up every current NHL and ACC ref. Bunch of godamned imbeciles.

Supplemental discipline for Kucherov? I didn’t see the game, only the replays.

The boarding can be seen much better in the replay than live action. It was a nasty, vicious hit that deserves a long term suspension. K should not return at anytime during the playoffs!

Bravo to the BJ's and Isles!

NHL Player Safety tweeted out 10 minutes ago that Kucherov has a hearing tomorrow. A suspension is looming.

I don't think they have a choice, as there's just no defending that hit. It was 100% garbage from a player who doesn't normal peddle in such nonsense. One game out at a minimum.

Makes me wonder if we rather would have played the bolts. They have not played important games in such a long time they seem to have a hard time going back into that mode.
