2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

Currently watching Sharks and Avs. Talk about a completely different style and feel of game compared to Isles and Canes. Way more open ice to work with!

I’m watching the bruins BJs game. The reffing is absolutely pathetic. This resembles a WWE exhibition.

Maybe these two teams will destroy each other physically this series.

It's going to take a toll. It always does. And I think Boston is more at risk of getting dinged up than Columbus, who are more mobile across the roster. Torts' teams have a history of burning out in the post season though, so there's that. Neither one of those teams is going to enjoy the gear change required to beat their next opponent, regardless of who that ends up being. The Canes and Isles have one thing very definitely in common ... they're both just absolutely no fun to play against.

Sorry Andy. Just saw your comment above

No worries. It was worth repeating, even though it’s a regular season award. Crosby and Kucherov, sure. McDavid? Great individual season. But Edmonton finished with 79 points, 11 points out of the playoffs, 14 points out of 3rd in the division. Like Andre Dawson winning MVP for the last place Cubs, this one doesn’t make any sense.

Depending on what metrics or other criteria you're using...

McDavid was second to Kucherov in points and point shares, and tied with him in goals. If you wanted to replace him with anyone, it would probably be Mark Giordano of the Flames, who is likely to win the Norris with a league leading +39 and 12.6 point shares. Or maybe Brad Marchand, who is the highest scoring player in the regular season to actually make it past the first round.

Granted, the voting doesn't factor in playoff performance anyway.

a. I don't know why people have to keep mentioning the post season because for the purposes of this award, it is irrelevant ... it just is. So, like stop using it to judge.

2. I'm never clear why people get all caught up in team success for individual awards. The Hart is supposed to be for the "most valuable player to his team" NOT the most valuable to a good team. There are PLENTY of spoils for good teams, and guys like McDavid stuck on garbage teams only have this. Why do people want to take even that away from them?

c. When it comes to driving their teams' play ... both by measurable metrics and by the eye test ... Crosby and McDavid are clearly on the same planet as Kucherov. And for this season at least, it's a pretty lonely planet. Kucherov probably wins this in a runaway, but for my money you can throw it to any one of the three.

I think the jabs are more about those almighty teams going nowhere than arguining about whether or not the MVP should come
from the cup champ. The unbeatable Lightning, Pens, etc are watching lowly, small market teams with crap players play for the Cup.

People are having fun with it.

THIS year maybe ... but this is a thing that happens every single year

I really don't accept the 'low budget' and 'small market' etiquette attributed, too often to our club. We are not overloaded with high priced one dimensional gunners, no. But we absolutely have talent. A team that can win with an Aho playing at 65%, a bunch of key injuries to vital role players on the team... is not perhaps the counter argument, but if you take the large sample size from Jan 1st till end of season, I think you find our team and players at the top of a lot of these offensive metrics. What every team is learning is that this bunch really and truly has bought in to the team game since day one and results although not immediate, certainly showed in every positive way when we hit our stride. We were how many points from winning our division? Right. Not that far behind! Sorry, just bucking the trend a bit with all the media spinning us as overachieving. The only way I am really seeing this bunch overachieve is their poise and determination, all this on a squad with a handful of experienced playoff performers and a lot playing the first time in the NHL playoffs. That's impressive. But that the RBA way no? ;) And that's why the guys we swapped out in the off season are all not playing hockey anymore =D

I think that might be the biggest take from the season as a whole. Those hard decisions to cut loose the guys like Skinner, Lindholm, Hanafin and Darling was the main vision that Brindy had with what he wanted from his team moving forward. He talks glowingly of guys like Foegele, McGinn, de Haan, Mrazek...guys that wanted to be here and earned their playing time with hard work and now they are being rewarded. Nothing seems to be given from Brindy, it's all earned and everyone has bought in.

Hold on a minute. Cutting Darling loose was not because of RBA's vision. The guy was just bad and had to go. My recollection of Lindholm and Hanafin was that there were contract discussions and they were asking for way too much in Dundon's view than they had proven they were worth, so they were moved. I'll buy that Skinner's exit could have had a lot to do with RBA. Let's not reinvent history here to fit a narrative.

Darling being moved out based on the circumstances and MAC coming in played a big part on why this team is where they are today, that was why I included him, this team was not getting 20 wins out of Darling this past season, so that played a part in how things evolved as well.

No matter who actually pulled the trigger on getting Darling out of town and off of this roster, I have absolutely zero doubt that it was a HUGE step towards the team that Brind'Amour (or any coach for that matter) needed to get where the Canes are right now. The guy had turned into a confidence black hole and he was negatively impacting the entire roster.
