Former Whaler/Checker/Everblade Carter Sandlak is a full time AHL referee this year. He played for the Whalers in 13-14 and split the next 2 seasons between Charlotte and Florida. He played in Toledo in 16-17 and Greenville in 17-18 in the ECHL and moved from active player straight to referee.

I remember reading a piece in the Greenville paper about Sandlak's plans last spring when we were down for SC Comicon. Seems like a good guy who is getting into officiating for the right reasons.

that reminds me that a former Braves player went into officiating but not in baseball. He refs college basketball. pretty unusual to ref a sport when you played another sport at the major league level.
