2018 NHL Entry Draft

Trying to figure out who I would like after Dahlin for the Habs. Seems like the Russian and Zadina would be my next 2. Call me old school but I'm not a big fan of taking 5'10 defensemen in the top 5 so I would probably pass on Quinn and Boqvist. I'd probably go for Wahlstrom instead. Then maybe Tkatchuk, although he would likely be the typical beef-flop Habs pick. Then the midgets.

Guess I should start learning about these players...but skill > size all day everyday

The key is going to be if MB can find a way to get another first round pick so he can draft the best available player first and by need later in the first round

With all do respect, I don't think you quite grasp (or simply just don't want to admit it) just how many needs this team has. Whomever they pick with their 1st will be the best available player AND fit a need.

The current roster is in shambles.....

I agree with getting more first rounders, but there are so many needs that you can't really go wrong if they just take the best available.

I see a lot of McAvoy in Quinn Hughes...I think he may even be better skill-wise due to his speed quotient being superior to McAvoy - haven't seen enough to gauge hockey IQ

Would you take Krug or Ryan Ellis on your team?

not Krug, I hate him, he is so punchable

that being said, we already have Mete who is short, Jerabek who is short (both of which are basically my son's height and he is 14)

how many short D can you have?

Ya. I would rather have Hedman, or OEL...but not Cowen. Nor would I want some of the wingers around his spot....like Paajarv
Skills + size > skills - size > size - skills

On a top 5 pick, I want both, especially for a defensemen.

depends on what one defines as skill, being able to hit well at the back end, clear out the boards using your size and determination is a skill

If only define skill as skating and dangling, then fine, but it isn't like the you take a guy 5'7 because he skates at 13.04 around the rink over a 6'3 guy who goes 13.5, the difference is so negligible that the size makes up for it

That is especially the case when considering dmen as they have to clear the front of the net, use the body etc. There is a reason all the way through from Atom to NHL that dmen tend to be bigger.

The current depth on the wings isn’t that bad

Drouin and Galchenyuk are wingers and both aren’t even 24 years old yet.

Than you have Max and Gallgher followed by Hudon and Lehkonen

i agree that in the end you take the best abailable player but if you get another first rounder you maybe take a chance on a center if you don’t take one with your first pick be Ng as center is really really a weakness

Best player available every. single. time.

I could easily come up with a Stanley Cup favoured team with every skater being under 6' tall. Shit, the best player of this generation isn't 6' tall.

Obviously you don't get to pick and choose players who are already proven when you're building a team... but the point remains, you don't have to be big to be effective in the NHL.

I just didn't get a great vibe from what Bob McKenzie said this morning regarding players outside the top 5.....from what Bob was saying, if we don't get Svechnikov-Zadina-Tkachuk, we'll be stuck with 2nd pairing dmen/2-3rd line centers at position 6-10.

You're that confident that we won't get Dahlin?

I agree... in order for me to feel really good about this season we need one of Dahlin............... Svechnikov, Zadina, Tkachuk and "worst case" maybe Boqvist or Wahlstrom. We really need top 4 though.

Anything outside of Dahlin or the 3 wingers is a major disappointment......Boqvist and others are nowhere near Sergachev potential.....major disappointment after the shitty year we had, and combine that with failing to land a #1 center in every draft we were in the top 10: 2001 (Komi), 2003 (AK46), 2005 (Price), 2012 (Chuckie)

that is the crux of the matter though, it all depends how you figure out who is the best available, what criteria go into the mix.

I'm pretty sure if Bobby Lalonde was draftable now, at 5'5, even if he was more skilled than all other draftees, faster skater, better stickhandler, better shot, noone would take him 1st overall because he is 5'5.

Something will happen to keep up from top overall, and I bet even if we did win that, people would say, send Dahlin to the minors, let him dominate, no need to rush him etc

Only Jacques Lemaire mentality would dictate this.....

Our last hope is that Julien changes his style of coaching, which likely won't happen

I wouldn't be 100% opposed to having him start the year in the AHL and possibly play the whole year in the A... just to get a good feel for North American pro hockey game. That said... he is already more than good enough to play in the NHL.

Yeah, at some point you are just too small to spend a top pick on. But 5'10, 5'11 isn't THAT small if the numbers are there.
