The Canes are in the freaking NHL playoffs and their AHL affiliate is whinging about not having a player the big club ended up putting in the lineup. That is patently ridiculous, of course.
I don't think it's ridiculous...it's simply reality. A minor league team in a big market like Chicago can regularly attract a decent crowd without winning championships. The Wolves haven't raised the Calder Cup in more than a decade, yet they've averaged more than 7,000 butts in the seats every season since 2000. The Cherkers have never broken the 7,000 average, even in recent years when they've been very good. Throw in the value of TV rights in the country's third biggest market (the Wolves are on local TV at least 40 times a season) and you have a much stronger financial situation overall in Chicago.
The Canes are more interested in using their AHL affiliate for player development than in trying to help a franchise develop on the other side of their home state; that strikes me as smart business and I think this move will benefit them. I can't blame the Cherkers for not being in a better position to meet the Canes' needs. Both organizations are doing what is best for themselves. It's not personal, it's just business.
