2019 Offseason Thread

New Managers, if you have any questions about the league rules, settings, etc. feel free to post 'em now. Want to make sure you're ready for the draft. A few things:

- Keep an eye on Fantasy Points Per Game. A key metric in this league.
- Minor League Eligibility is 150 GP (or less) for position players, 50 GP (or less) for pitchers.
- After dispersal draft, we'll do our regular draft. Players eligible include anyone drafted last year (ie. 2019 MLB Draft) plus 2019 international FA signings, unprotected players from our lists, and FA's in Fantrax.
- Be aware that Montana is a trade ninja. :)

Any other questions, fire away.

I'm excited to get going. What is our pick situation for the regular draft? Only other question I have is do we set weekly lineups? I am good to start the dispersal draft whenever works for everyone. Thanks!

I believe you'll only have picks for this draft that you select in the dispersal draft.

Yes, weekly lineup changes.

That's a good point to make sure it's clear for you guys. If you look at the dispersal draft thread list of players, there is also a list of draft picks. You can select any of those during the dispersal draft with any of your picks.

Ok, that clears that up. Thank you!

Some general comments:
-we're a points league, so if you're used to roto, stuff is different here. Dee Gordon is not a first round pick in this league :p
-At least for me, Fantrax has changed their default listing of players to a "projected" points. It's helpful to flip back and forth between that and their actual points earned last season, since that can change a lot for players
-All the guys on my unprotected list suck, you definitely don't want any of them
-Prospects are king
-Good luck!

I highly highly highly recommend holding on to most/all of your studs until well in to the year when you're confident you have a good feel for the league scoring and how players are valued.

SPs, and prospects are King as mentioned (add a good 20-30% to what you initially think they might be worth).....

- be wary of early offers for them, as they're likely somewhat low-ball....(this league is full of great guys, but you're liable to be inundated with offers early....and could end up regretting them later, if you don't have a firm grasp on league scoring/values).

- patience is a major virtue in this format.

- .....if you don't think you can contend now, hold your first round picks as they're the best bet to be the cornerstone of your rebuild. Control your picks, control your future.

- lower ever so slightly how you view/value stolen bases, it's the one thing we don't value too highly in this format....pure stolen base guys who are often studs in roto/h2h, are often waiver wire fodder here if they bring little else.

- we dig the long ball, and we dig the strikeout...you should too.

- as the season goes on, players FPPG often becomes their one true value.....but don't mistakenly value it too highly early, leading to selling too low/buying too high. Patience, patience, patience.

- if you don't like an offer, feel free to let the manager know in the comments as to why....and/or what kind of deal you might be willing to make instead.....90% of deals in this league are often built off counters/comment section communication.

- use that waiver wire & free agent pool religiously....especially for prospects. As valuable as those 1st round picks can be, picking up a prospect in August/September for free, who is then a top 100 prospect when the off-season lists roll around is plenty common.

Best of luck, and always feel free to ask if you're unsure of anything. 👍

Players go on waivers for 48 hours - it depends on the time of day a drop is made but it's basically 48 hours plus however many hours are left until the next day's waivers are processed by Fantrax, which I believe is 3:00 am EST. No FAAB.

Some excellent points about the league were made above. I had actually intended to mention stolen bases in my notes. I think they're undervalued here, they certainly have some value, but nowhere near a 5x5 roto league. I actually wouldn't mind discussing a (very) slight increase to SB points, if anybody wants to discuss that at some point.

Montana made a great point about the trade offer comment section. Don't be afraid to send a counter-offer.

Also should mention that no team can lose more than 3 of their 5 unprotected players. This usually applies only to the regular draft, but this year it includes both the dispersal & regular drafts.

Sorry, lots of questions, I am sure more as they come up. Do we have a limit on waiver moves?

Sb are valued here the same as any other base (1b+SB=2b), so not sure there's a need to increase it.

No limit on waiver claims, but I think when you claim someone, you go to the back of the priority sequence. And once a player has cleared those 48hrs waivers just a first come first served option to pick them up.

SB's are a lot rarer and more impactful on the game than a single.
This league has always attempted to accurately reflect the value of a stat, not reward rarity.

A triple is far more rare than a HR... but we don't give more points for it.

That's because it's pretty obvious that a HR is more valuable than a triple.

We also don't subtract half the points received for a single, if the guy gets out while trying to get to first for a single.

Maybe the answer is just to remove (or reduce) the penalty for caught stealing. I've never liked losing points for that.

And I guess Bull is dealing with some issues, it is frustrating for sure. But he's been a long-time member of several of our leagues and is a good guy (when he actually responds to inquiries, that is).

I've been chatting with him today, he's in. He's even completed a couple of trades. I'll bug him again about his entry fee. Not sure why he hasn't done it yet.

Hate to mention it, but I feel that you guys should start thinking about adding Bull’s team to the dispersal draft. He hasn’t posted in the forum or paid his league fees and I don’t know how involved of a manager he will be, this season. Also, for selfish reasons, he has a pretty good team..
Nah, Bull is back... he even made a trade.

I'd be fine bumping the reward for stealing and leaving the penalty for CS. Looking at last years leaderboard it would probably just make elite guys a little better rather than make ok players good, so not sure we even need to do it.

Thanks for all the insight guys. Looking forward to building this team. I agree. Bulls team would have been much nicer in the dispersal draft. I am home all day tomorrow, so whenever we want to start is good with me. Do we know the order? Did I miss it somewhere?

I know it's tough to make scoring changes, it can throw things out of whack. But steals are a big (and fun) part of fantasy baseball. Certainly worth discussing, anyway.
