2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

I gave up on sports card collecting many years ago. I was into it back in the early 90s, collecting mostly hockey, and a handful of other athletes like Griffey Jr, David Robinson, etc. But it got utterly ridiculous. No longer a kids hobby. Packs were $12, with 5 cards in them! I worked for a printing company that printed them by the millions. The "rarity" factor was overplayed. Insert cards became the goal. Fast forward 20+ years, and I now want to have a handful of select cards from just a handful of Canes players, and maybe Ohtani since I'm a Dodgers fan. I've been picking up a few cards here and there. Not the $200 cards, just ones I like the looks of, or a few with signatures, jersey swatches, etc. I found a signed Paul Ranheim to go with my game worn jersey. And I grabbed a 9/10 Aho card today at a little shop down at the coast. Looking to ad a few cool Hall cards now, and a Bussi rookie. I have a few nice looking of Nishikin, Svetch, Ehlers, Stanky, Jarvis and Blake. You guys collect any cards?

A 'friend' of mine swiped a Stan Museal (sp???) card I had back about 1971. I'm still pissed at that.

Look … that would have enough of an excuse for violence when I was a kid. I grew up a Cardinals fan and Stan Musial is our patron saint.

That said, I really wasn’t a collector growing up. I didn’t even keep most of the silver age comics I bought. I’ve got like three autographs from the old days. A 1974 ACC Tournament program with David Thompson’s autograph, a random baseball signed by Mickey Mantle that I’m not even sure I remember getting and a baseball signed by Lou Brock from the first Cards game I went to. I had a few more back in the day but I’ve got absolutely no memory of what happened to them.

I'm sure I destroyed a small fortune in comic books by reading them over and over and throwing them around my room for years. I have a stack that somehow survived for decades in a random box or two. I did just find a card I forgot I even had, a 2003-04 with a jersey swatch from Francis and Staal. It was a Teammates insert.

Yeah, I’ve got some working knowledge of comic book grading from my years of riding the artists tables with my daughter at all those comic book conventions. There’s a HUGE difference in market value between higher and lower graded books. The older the book, the bigger the difference the grade makes. I was a subscriber for Spider-Man books right through a couple of prime silver age runs when I was a kid and I could have made a fair amount selling those if I had kept them crispy and held onto them, but alas … there’s a reason vintage books are expensive. Almost nobody held onto them. I got deeply into weird Harvey, Dell and Gold Key books from the 60s when I was hanging around conventions a lot. Even with those being only niche publishers, you still find a fair amount of moderately graded stuff on the market. So, somebody kept their old books. Chalk it up to hoarding and/or blind optimism, I guess.

I have a complete 1978 Topps MLB set. Great condition, almost untouched, and I've hung onto them all these years, but I've never really been into the collecting for collecting's sake. I did used to wear out the path from my house through the woods to the local store in that relative range of years, buying those cheap packs of bubble gum & baseball cards to trade, flip, put on bike wheels, etc... those cards are all lost to time.

... and a notebook binder full of random Canes cards going back to '97... 99% unsigned of course... I'm not "that guy" to stand outside of practice with my binder :p

I have complete 68 and 70 Topps baseball card sets mostly from collecting gum packs as a kid.

Got back into the hobby in the early to mid-80's and have complete sets of Topps, Fleer and Donruss from that era.

Also have rookie cards of Ryan, Bench, Rickey Henderson, Cal Ripken, Wade Boggs and a T-206 Nap Lajoie.

I have or had some Score hockey from 89-91 probably back when Jahr and Lindros were hotter than Hades. I used to have complete sets. Probably buried in the attic somewhere.

I am similar. I also have the first year upper deck came out. The full set with the plastic wrap around the box. Also have signed cards from a bunch of eighties legends. Andre Dawson, Tom Seaver, Dale Murphy, Ricky Henderson. I’d like to find a shop that will appraise it for me. If you know anyone from Fayetteville to Raleigh let me know. I’m looking to sell. I was keeping them to pass on but I had daughters who could not care less about baseball. I have some pretty rare rookie cards and some of those defective cards that are worth money. The Billy Ripken white-out card probably the best.

Also, Carolina Rare Coins and Currency does sports cards as well. His name is Don Bissett. Phone number 919-756-7616. He's at 7610 Falls of Neuse

Oh man, did I screw up. I was a rabid Marvel Comic Books collector as a young teen but as I grew older, I gave them all away to another collector! I had the first edition of Spider man and every issue up through the mid 50s or 60s, plus lots of old Fantastic Four, Daredevil, X-Men, etc.

I'd try Cardiacs in Apex too.
