Lowe’s is our regular destination. The closest supermarket is a Harris Teeter that was converted from a Kroger. We stopped going there when it was Kroger because their produce sucked. The only time I walk into a Food Lion is when we’re at the beach, it’s the only supermarket between the Atlantic Beach Causeway and the hotel we stay in. There is at least 1 Publix at the other end of the island, but we rarely come in through Emerald Isle.Lowes Foods is about 5 minutes from my house. It's never crowded. No lines. Expensive. But sometimes the extra money is with not having to deal with 7,000 people in Harris Teeter, Food Lion or Walmart. And I like their salad bar.
The Emerald Isle food lion? Couldn’t remember if there was one at the other end of the island. Think he’s talking about the AB (maybe in PKS) Food Lion. The Emerald Isle food lion? Couldn’t remember if there was one at the other end of the island. I worked there in high school and at the waterslide and old lighthouse putt putt in Emerald Isle.
Coach k had a beachouse there and one summer we were playing pickup at the travel park and Christian Laetner and Brian Davis came and played. That’s one way to make you feel less than adequate at sports
I am talking about the AB Food Lion. With Bojangles in front of it, across from a park of sorts.Think he’s talking about the AB (maybe in PKS) Food Lion.
There’s a Lowes Foods pretty much right at the MHC end of the causeway. (FYI)
Fun fact, there used to be a concrete water slide attraction on that lot back in the 70s. It was terrible and unsafe at any speed (think Action Park’s homemade nonsense on a much, much smaller scale) which meant that we LOVED it. Then some developer schmuck bought that land and put in a Food Lion/Drug Store combo strip, which eventually went bankrupt about three times before the Town bought it at auction and turned it into a municipal park. The Food Lion operator bailed when the strip center got built across NC54 which contributed to the final bankruptcy.I am talking about the AB Food Lion. We always stay at what used to be the Ramada in PKS. It’s gone through several iterations and just rebranded again. With a daughter in Wilmington, we haven’t been there in a few years, but might get back there this summer. Our daughter’s wedding likely took us out of our annual trip to Martha’s Vineyard and my wife is really missing beach time.I used to stay at Palm Suites there just before you get to Food Lion. Used to love that place, but some changes they made over the last few years, pushed me out.
I loved that place and the little amusement park that used to be on the causeway. I also used to love Jungleland which is still there but has a different name and they added the putt putt with the trainFun fact, there used to be a concrete water slide attraction on that lot back in the 70s. This has been your Crystal Coast history minute. I hope you enjoyed it.
For several years I had a season pass at Jungleland. My Mom would drop us off when they opened and come back for us after lunch. Different times, man.I loved that place and the little amusement park that used to be on the causeway. Yep. There are still songs on the radio that remind me of specific places on that island. Like Flock of Seagulls I Ran always reminds me of the Salter Path pier because the grill used to blast music all day and that song was everywhereFor several years I had a season pass at Jungleland. That said, even with all the time I spent at Atlantic Beach and later Pine Knoll Shores from the 70s until the 2020s, I haven’t even been on the island since I helped my parents get their stuff out of the condo in 2024 and I don’t really miss it. I spend all my elective time in the mountains now and would move to Boone in a heartbeat if I didn’t need to stick to Raleigh to take care of my parents
It's funny how certain songs trigger memories. My parents bowled in a league in Wilmington when I was a kid. The jukebox in the bowling alley was always blasting Rod Stewart, Boston, Bob Seger, and Bad Company. And certain songs will immediatly give me Cardinal Lanes flashbacks! I don't think I ever stepped foot on the Atlantic Beach area until I went to ECU. Growing up 5 minutes from Carolina Beach and later Myrtle Beach, I didn't know Emerald Isle existed.Yep.
