2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

In the market for a new Windows laptop as the one I currently own (11 years old) is now, due to old firmware, vulnerable to Secure Boot malware which could be loaded prior to any anti-virus software kicks in at startup. The manufacture doesn't provide a new BIOS update that will remedy this.

Prefer the $800 to $1000 price range with at least 16 GB of RAM and at least 512 GB on the SSD. No Snapdragon chip. Either Intel or AMD.

I've never had a problem w/ the Dell laptops we've been using for a couple decades. We use them for drafting and graphics programs in addition to regular old Windows functions.

I got a Lenovo Yoga a few months ago and it’s great. It has a snapdragon chip and I was concerned about it not running some programs. I put it through its paces when I first got it and had no issues and since then the fact that it’s a snapdragon PC has not crossed my mind, except when I look at the battery meter and am astonished at how much is left.

Did you get the 2-in-1 version that doubles as a tablet and a laptop?
 
My old laptop was pushing 10 years. I hated it, hadn't used it much at all because it was so slow, forever to boot up, struggled to install updates, USB ports rarely worked. I went with a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3. The version I have is fully hot rodded except it has the smaller HDD. I have a 2Tb external, if I need it though. The Lenovo flies.

Doing some research this week, I have to say I am leaning towards a Lenovo.

Did not. Got an iPad Air at the same time to fill that slot. It was a full tech upgrade. Recycled my Lenovo desktop and HP laptop, which were both on the path to the Windows 10 EOL. Now I just have the tablet, notebook and a dock station with a large Asus screen for the times that I need the screen real estate.
 
If you decide that you don't need something brand new, there's a shop in Cary that I've recently purchased a few used computers from; a laptop for myself and a gaming rig for the kid. Both were excellent deals and basically new. Triangle PC Geek on Chatham St in Cary, over by the Indian restaurants in east Cary.

I had some old ThinkPads back in the day that were corporate leftovers. They were tanks until my kids got hold of them. But it was ultimately Windows forcing updates into machines never intended to run newer Windows that killed them. I turned off the auto updates, and Windows tried for years to force updates. Ultimately they succeeded and it literally killed the old ThinkPad. Forced obsolescence. I went with the Gaming model because it's got a pretty powerful processor and graphics card. I plan to run a golf sim off it eventually.
 
As I was digging through the boxes upon boxes of cards I pulled out of the attic a month ago I noticed something about the 1995 hockey sets. They were big on this guy. He was a featured rookie on a ton of cards, inserts, etc. Every special rookie set features this guy, who I have never heard of. From this early 90s sets, plenty of the palyers names ring familiar. Even the busts like Daigle. But someone, was really banking on Steve Larouche as a top prospect.
