2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Even though I haven't seen him in the daytime lately, my deer buddy Edgar Winter came by when I couldn't see him. It occurred to me "They Only Come Out in the Dark" seemed kinda fitting. He's put on a little weight and has a regular crew of does and young bucks that he runs with.

Takes me back to those days Jim at the Canes tailgate when you use to bring the Bambi burgers and Sloppy Does...

Yeah, those came from a different farm & I didn't know them like I do these. The ones around the house are safe from me.

Venison fed me for decades, for sure. I used to take at least two deer minimum for the tailgate every year. I decided that since I took so many over the years that I also needed to give back somewhere, so why not where I could provide a little sanctuary for them too.

My mom leaves corn in bowls for deer in her yard and my sister hand feeds carrots to deer through her fence. They don't like me saying 'venison'.

We have a local legend that our neighborhood is built on an old deer migration route. It’s not unusual to see anywhere up to 10 deer hanging around in our yard. We usually buy 3 pumpkins for Halloween and when we’re done with them, I smash them against a tree in the woods between my house and the neighbor. By that time, with a hard freeze, they’ve eaten my hibiscus plants down to the roots several times over the course of the summer, so they need something new to munch on.

CBS replacing Romo with Watt as lead analyst. I wonder if these people actually listen to their own broadcasts. Romo was not good especially the last couple of years. JJ might be worse.

Also the nfl fined 3 coaches $250,000 for shit talking the refs. Hilarious. Players making 10 times their coach behead someone then piss on the corpse at midfield and they get a $10,000 fine and a helmet sticker

Romo was good his first year or two. Then, by all accounts, he stopped doing the prep work and he went rapidly downhill. I haven’t listened much to Watt, my Giants are so bad, they don’t get the A team.

Same. I've only heard Watt on highlight packages. Romo is weird, because normally former players start out terrible and then grow into the analyst jobs, but he started out pretty strong before he got the big head and crashed out. Greg Olsen is another one that was really good right out of the gate. That's far from the norm. Olsen is 1st team good and stuck behind Brady (very much a work in progress himself) at Fox.

It's tough for networks because they seem to be convinced that they need that lead analyst to be either a big draw himself or to be fresh enough out of the player pool to be relevant that way. WAY above my pay grade. I just prefer the broadcast team not to be a distraction.

Agree on Olsen. I’ve seen sports media rumblings that he could replace Aikman at ESPN if it gets that far. Aikman’s nose is a little out of shape because Buck got a new contract and his is up after the season.

My lot backs up to RCC and we see deer wandering in the back yard with regularity.

Cool deal that you've got a regular deer trail and are willing to suppliment their feed, Andy. They will remember where you are for sure.

I feed the deer behind my house and have every day for 34 years. I've got a couple of barrel feeders with a timer and a spinner motor that slings corn a couple times a day when I'm not home. The most deer ever here at one time was 27, when there was deep snow on the ground one February. It looked like a deer park. I shovel trails and clear off big areas when it snows to spread the feed, so they're less inclined to fight over it and each one gets something to eat. I feed corn, apples, sweet feed (primarily for horses), pears (from neighbor's pear trees that are behind fences), peanut butter, watermelon rind, pumpkin, pineapple rind, and granola bars. My wife thinks I'm insane (probably am), but I get to watch and study deer behavior every day up close when I'm home. It's a matriarchial society, so the Does stay in the same smaller area, while the bucks establish a bigger range. Most of the bucks leave the doe herd @ ~15 months, after they polish their first set of antlers (they leave to seek their own turf for the rut, which is why so many young bucks are roadkill this time of year), but every now & then one comes back and stays around. They can get impressively large if they're allowed to and are lucky enough to survive.

One of the longtime resident Does is 15 years old and is the great-great grand daughter of the first wild deer that ever ate from my hand. She was orphaned at less than a month old and some of the other deer bullied her. Since her mother trusted me, she learned to as a fawn, and would come close to me. I got her to eat from the bucket of feed and eventually she got to where I could pull ticks off her ears and comb the mites off her in summer with a flea comb. She brought one of her newborn fawns up to me when it was less than 3 hours old, to show how much she trusts me. I haven't taken any deer in about 10 years. I figure that I need to pay back for all they gave me over the years. There's also a wild rabbit here that comes up to me for apple, corn, and granola bar. Had a groundhog that did the same thing for a few years, but she drowned in a flood from a tropical storm a few years back.

The Knicks passed out their championship rings when they raised the banner at MSG on Tuesday night. But the boxes for the assistant coaches were empty. They were told earlier that day that they wouldn’t be receiving them, which wasn’t a surprise since they hadn’t been fitted. But they had to participate in the in-court charade. Worse, some Knicks employees were sent an email telling them to pick their rings out, choosing from 2 different designs. But it wasn’t to pick out their rings, it was a phishing exercise. Everyone thst clicked on the link had to attend a mandatory training class.

this shouldn’t be behind the paywall, it’s a gift link.

I get those stupid phishing email at work but to do that with a championship ring selection is beyond evil. F*** those guys
