2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Not surprisingly, the 50s was when the NCAA concocted the term “student-athlete,” which is now part of their bedrock gospel, specifically to counter the notion that the players were employees. The NCAA’s whole scheme has been on borrowed time for decades, and they’ve known it all along.
Turns out it was all a sham all along. Not surprising really, when you sit down and give it some serious thought.

As someone who works for a university - D1 athletics can die a painful death. It's always just been a money factory. At lower levels it helps some with organization, but our local conference is all we need.

When certain teams have entire educational programs that were basically fabricated and the NCAA looked the other way, at least then i knew it was all out in the open.
Typo!
Should change their name to the Fighting Typos.

Clemson also filed suit against the ACC in North Carolina. They learned from FSU, which was pre-empted by an undisclosed suit
brought by the ACC in NC, the day before Felony State filed in Florida.

I didn’t read that. I saw where the ACC sued Clemson in NC. Clemson filed suit in Pickens County SC.

Yeah, Clemson also sued to break the Grant in Rights agreement, but on different grounds than FSU. And look, the ACC is eventually going to settle with FSU and Clemson, everybody knows that. Clemson didn't even make a serious argument in their suit. They just want out and are getting the process formally started. With the revenues from the new bowl championship deal being unbalanced in favor of the SEC and B1G, the ACC is either cooked or doomed to 2nd class citizen status in football. The schools who don't want that are gonna force their way out, it's just a matter of how much it will cost them. There's no "winning" or "losing" from here out. Everybody already lost. TV picked the winners.

I always enjoy covering the NCAA tournament. I was in Charlotte all weekend for that regional and it was a great event, as usual. I ate too much popcorn and candy in the media room, but I’ll just have to hit it harder at the gym this week.

I can not make the Sweet Sixteen but I will be covering the Final 4 in Phoenix should UNC make it that far. Hoping all ACC teams keep advancing!

The reports of the ACC’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Suck it SEC
Well, last season wasn't exactly a watershed, but yeah ... it's almost like the media who cover these things have a vested interest in propping up a couple of conference competitors that they have decided are winning the football sweepstakes. And it's almost like they've forgotten that there's almost no link between success in the two sports. Almost.

Although I was amused by bracket guru/NCAA lack-spittle Joe Lunardi making an absolute ass of himself on social media this week. That part was fun.

It's the refusal to believe that their precious NET rankings and seeding formulas are so flawed that you'd be forgiven for thinking that they're some kind of psy op. Hockey people are constantly harping on the computer model guys, but at least they all acknowledge that their models are never going to be perfect and are constantly being tweaked and (hopefully) improved. At least the doofus SEC Commish is getting roasted for suggesting that the NCAA needs more middling power conference teams instead of all those smaller conference automatic qualifiers. What an idiot. Why do you think people watch (and bet), Greg? He'd probably turn the Indiana High School Championships into a 4 team invitational.

Look ... the sooner the NCAA just folds to reality and lets football do its own thing the better off everyone will be. If they let this play out any other way, eventually the networks and the football mooks WILL ruin the basketball tournament. Which is literally the only thing the NCAA still does well.

Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter is out of the lineup, and is the subject of an NBA investigation into irregularities involving prop bets. This comes on the heels of Rece Davis being slammed for a comment about “risk free investment” on College Game Day on Saturday and Shohei Ohtani‘s translator stealing from him to cover alleged gambling losses.

The argument is that with legalized sports wagering, the companies that offer it are watching the bets from athletes like a hawk to remain in partnerships with the leagues. They are catching the shenanigans unlike in the past when all athletes used underground bookies to make their bets. We're going to see more and more big time athletes get caught participating in inappropriate actions because it's all above ground now. Of course, the "smart" athletes will continue to use underground bookies to not get caught. Unless, of course, they send traceable payments directly to these bookies. Right, Shohei, ya dumbass?

Or strawmen bettors, like Josh Norris. With 12 Canadian franchises across the NHL, NBA, MLB and MLS it’s going to happen again.

Honestly, Davis should be fired for that BS. This little revenue deal with the Devil that we've made with sports gambling needs to come with some adult guardrails. The first of which should be "let's be honest about the nature of the transaction. Gambling is a wager with inherit risk and the bettor will lose more than they win the VAST majority of the time."

MLB would never admit the truth on Ohtani even if there was proof he was involved in wrongdoing...that will get so swept under the rug like no tomorrow. Nothing to see here, move along.

He said it was tongue in cheek. And if ESPN didn’t have a branded gambling site, or if the segment wasn’t with their betting “expert“ Erin Dolan, maybe it could have been taken as such. The article below says that ESPN has been conservative about hawking their site. Maybe so elsewhere in the country, but they‘re ubiquitous on my TV, just as much as the others. And the link to the site is on the top menu on their web site.
