Everyone come through last night's nastiness OK? We briefly lost power for about 10 minutes, my neighbors are on a different circuit and are still out, I hear a generator running. The lights at Creedmoor Rd. at the ramp onto westbound 540 are out as are the lights at Creedmoor Rd. and Stonehenge. In the news last night, they said the area at Leesville and 540 was pretty badly hit too.

No problems on New Bern Ave.

It sounded bad around Brier Creek. I saw one warning that said rotation was spotted near RDU. But we mostly got heavy rain. I don't see much wind damage.

Thanks to all this rain, the City of Raleigh water restrictions will be lifted on August 3.

'Once' Oscar winner and Irish musician Glen Hansard dies in motorcycle crash

Academy Award-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has died in a motorcycle crash. His management says the accident happened in Dublin on Wednesday. He was 56.

I am in fact mourning the loss of Glen Hansard, but I am back in town after my week and change in Canada and Alaska. I tried to watch the livestream of the public funeral services for Glen this morning but couldn’t get past the first musical tribute before I shut it down. I’ll revisit when I’m more able to process. Gone at 56 after a trad session in a pub. Too soon, for sure, but that’s not a terrible way for a modern troubadour to spend his last night.

If anybody’s up for it, you can watch Eddie Vedder do a quite moving rendition of Song of Good Hope on YouTube, I think. RTE is clipping stuff from the services on their socials. Vedder toured a lot with Glen during his ukulele phase and covered that song regularly. I’m honestly surprised he could get through it. They were close.

Hansard said the he and Veder became tight friends after Veder reached out when an audience member committed suicide by jumping off the stage roof and landed at Hansard’s feet. Hansard said that one act sent him in all sorts of ways and Veder just reached out and that connection was so powerful in getting him through that period.

Hansard was such a gifted songwriter.
