2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

GIANT ... legend ... legit badass. Little Richard's impact on American culture is huge. RIP indeed

RIP double rainbow guy. I know a lot of people mocked his reaction to the perfect double rainbow, but honestly, I find it kind of refreshing in these times. What I would give to see a perfect double rainbow in the mountains right now.

🌈🌈 to you, freaky NorCal hippie guy!

In today's Down Goes Brown column at The Athletic, he ponders on what person made the biggest positive impact on each NHL franchise. For the Hurricanes, he goes with Jim Rutherford taking over as GM of the team. Hard to argue with that pick, IMO. I guess a case could be made for Rod Brind'Amour. Maybe?

IMO it has to be Rutherford, unless you’re talking about Brind’Amour taking over as head coach, which has a bit of recency bias. Rutherford brought him here, kept him here and put him behind the bench the first time. And Rutherford was voted Executive of the Year twice by The Hockey News and once by Sporting News.

Zion Williamson being sued by the agent he first signed with and then fired. Among other things they want him to admit his parents got paid by Duke to play there. Duke "really investigated his recruitment and amazingly found no violations. " :)

Rutherford runs away with that by miles. Others receiving consideration ... Francis (his return as a UFA was a key milestone in NC, plus his time as GM ... debatable as it was), Brind'Amour (his first contract extension was the key to that Cup win, plus an influential run behind the bench), and if you lean into some recency bias you could throw Dundon into the Runners Up mix as well. I don't trust the guy as far as I can kick him, but he returned this club to relevance really quickly when that seemed danged unlikely to happen.

I think you are all forgetting about the time we acquired Anson Carter at the trade deadline and almost got into the 2007 playoffs.

Missed by 4 points. We got 1 goal out of Carter in 10 games, the same number we got from Ryan Bayda, who played 1 fewer game.

Well, I forgot about acquiring Scott Pellerin at the 2001 deadline. I had to look up the roster when I saw an unfamiliar number on the ice when they rebroadcast game 4 of the 2001 playoffs.

Not only did the Canes acquire Pellerin ... who did next to nothing in the playoff push that year ... they also promptly put him on the freaking first line with Ron Francis before Maurice woke up. Because Paul Maurice was Paul Maurice, the entire concept of having his two best offensive wingers (Kapanen and O'Neil) playing with his best offensive center (Francis) was causing him to break out in hives. He got Pellerin, demoted Kapanen to Brind'Amour's line and scratched his self destructive itch.

And people still give me crap for dumping on Mo. That guy was absolutely allergic to his teams scoring goals.

I doubt he sold earlier, so he had to sell when he became an employee of another team.
IIRC DeCock made a big deal out of chasing down a quote on that, and Jimmy finally admitted that Karmanos bought him out so he could take the Pens job. It may not have been Luke but I remember somebody from the local media got obsessed with that little detail.

Back to the person with the biggest impact... give him a few more years in the org and we might say Eric Tulsky.
