2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

In NHL pre-season action, Calgary beat Vancouver 10-0. The league has a rule about having at least 8 “veteran” players in the lineup for pre-season games, did the Canucks leave all their NHL players in Vancouver?
I've said it before ... it says you have to dress 8 veteran players. The rule says nothing about them being any good. And Vancouver has plenty of garbage on their roster, especially on D.

Anyone else listen to the newish 3:00 - 6:00 radio show that replaced Joe and Joe? He's not bad, but is mostly boring. It sounds like someone has entered all of the sports news of the last few days into an AI and the show is the computer talking to us about sports.

I find him a bit too football-centric. I realize he played QB in college and has a football background. (That was the best they could find?...still beats Ovies though.)
As I was walking for exercise yesterday, I tuned in for a few minutes (until I lost the signal...Piss-poor reception in N. Durham Regional Park @ best) and heard him mention that last night would be his first hockey game...whatever, at least he's not trying to fool anyone. Went back to music on the MP3 player & knocked out 4.5 miles. At least they didn't offer that idiot Mark Thomas a slot.

I gave it one segment while I was out running some errands, and that's probably enough for me. Dull, basic, uninteresting stuff.

We know NHL officiating is bad. But there is bad and there is Angel Hernandez bad.

Ah, the poster child for anti-union sentiment everywhere.

In an interview with David Glenn, Tom Dundon said he’s going to lead a group to try to get a MLB franchise for Narth Carolina, Raleigh specifically. Baseball is the only major league that hasn’t expanded in the last 25 years, since Tampa and Arizona joined in 1998. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said an expansion fee would be in the neighborhood of $2.2 billion, to which Dundon said “sounds reasonable”.

They have a TOOOONNN of work to do to catch up to Charlotte and Nashville which are the front runners for the next MLB expansion. Both of those cities have been working towards a franchise for more than a decade. Good Luck Tom, I would love to see it in Raleigh

Key word ... try

I've seen some speculation that MLB thinks the demographics of the RDU market might be a bit better for their product than Charlotte ... but our underlying pluses are basically the same as Nashvillle's, so ... yeah. Seems like a long shot, but you won't get a hit with the bat on your shoulder.

Charlotte and Nashville’s stadiums are also in downtown areas. Can either of them be expanded to accommodate MLB sizes?

IIRC, when there was talk of a relocating team moving here, a site in Kernersville was identified, someplace approximately equidistant from Charlotte and Raleigh. I can’t see that as a possibility anymore though.

A site equidistant from Raleigh and Charlotte is too far away from either for a daily game. Also, a downtown Raleigh stadium is a great location for everyone that lives within walking distance of that stadium, but that population ain't nearly enough to bring in a stadium-filling crowd. Unless, of course, Raleigh greatly and grandly updates its mass transit public transportation, and LOL at that idea ever happening.

Yeah ... you know what you get when you locate something equidistant from Charlotte and Raleigh? The NC Zoo. Nothing against the zoo, I love it, but it absolutely would have been a better draw if they had picked a freaking city to place the thing in instead of air-dropping the thing in Randolph County. No, nobody with any sense is doing that again and if somebody's proposing it then they're too stupid to get the franchise award in the first place.

I think Nashville is gonna get that expansion franchise, for the record. In the modern south you need a super strong suburban and exurban base and they have a better setup for that than Charlotte does.

Downtown Raleigh for a baseball stadium is a worse idea than a downtown hockey arena. More games, (hopefully) bigger crowds.
