2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

I feel your pain. I’m dealing with the teeth issues now too from the damage the radiation did. Haven’t had to have any removed yet. Fingers crossed 🤞 but I am going to have a crown after I heal up from this.

This article notes the practical consequences of colleges directly paying athletes. Two brothers, one at UVa, the other at NC State, lost their positions on the diving teams. UVa dropped the program entirely, NC State reduced the dive team to 1 diver, who ultimately left the program. It’s a gift article, not behind the WaPo paywall.

Watching HS athletes struggle to find colleges over the last several years tells me plenty about the state of NCAA sports. Big colleges pluch from small colleges. Small colleges pluck from D2, etc. More and more HS athletes who aren't 5 star prospects are having to pay to play at D3 level or settle for a PWO at a private school with 500 students.

Chantal was a beyotch. We got too much rain (no damage) that put the town's (Hillsborough) drinking water offline, so no consuming, tooth brushing, etc until it's been boiled. The town's wastewater processing system is down too, though I don't want to guess where that's going. We live outside of town on well and septic, but no power means no water or A/C. Lucky ones got 6" of rain, I've heard a few who got over 8" in just a few hours. On our way back from a pot luck supper at the horse farm last night, we ran into two places where the roads were impassbale from standing/running water. We were fortunate to get power back on before 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. Some weren't so lucky.

Here's a couple pictures from Lake Michie in Bahama. I was fishing out there on Saturday and it was at normal pool elevation and clearer. Today around Noon it was 11'-12' high, with maybe 2' of ramp showing. The walkways to the docks were below water. The lake looks muddy enough to plow. The bridge across the Flat River on State Forest Road was completely submerged.

I hope those hit hard are able to get back to normal life soon.

I drove home from the hospital in Chapel hill in that mess yesterday evening. Had quite a few scary moments between pittsboro and Fayetteville. It was ugly

It’s great news that you drove home.

my son will be very busy in the coming weeks/months rebuilding homes and commercial buildings.

They can sort out the legal and responsibility issues later but I feel awful for those families in Texas. Absolutely gut wrenching.

And having lived around chapel hill since the early 80s it’s crazy to think about the millions spent on the Eastgate area and the redoing of University mall to end up essentially at the same place with the flooding.

Tom Dundon has a new development opportunity. His Pacific Elm Properties was chosen by the RDU Airport Authority to develop 136 acres of what used to be part of Lake Crabtree County Park. Pacific Elm’s VP of Development told the Authority that they have in mind recreational activities such as climbing, skating, zip-lining and mountain biking. There might also be food and retail as part of the development.

That looks pretty fun, actually.

FWIW, I was involved a bit in the initial build-out of Lake Crabtree Park back when I was primarily in the sitework side of our business. That place was a freaking swamp and flooded at the drop of a hat. A basic 15 minute summer storm could cause all manner of chaos and sometimes threatened the bridge at Aviation Parkway. It took an amazing amount of civil engineering work just to get that place stable and use-able and it's great to see the public enjoying it to this day. The idea that they're going to move to a new phase with that much cool stuff is a bit mind boggling when I think of my crews hacking their way through that sinkhole and swamp infested mess back in the dark ages.

The American Athletic Conference, whose members include ECU and UNC Charlotte is no more. They’re rebranding as The American Conference, dropping ”Athletic” from their name. They’re also taking pains to remind everyone that AAC was never part of their desired branding. The league also has a bald eagle mascot named Soar, decked out in football and basketball gear.

The American was able to avoid defections in the last round of conference merry go round. Memphis wants to leave for either the Big 12 or ACC but didn’t find any takers. The American has the most lucrative TV deal among the Group of 5 conferences, so jumping to the Sun Belt to fill the voids from the raids in that conference would have been a money loser.
