2021-22-23-24-25 News Thread

Trinity Rodman stays in Washington, signing a 3 year deal worth more than $2 million per season, including bonuses. That makes her the highest paid women’s soccer player in the world. It will be interesting to see how that fits under a $3.7 million salary cap.

OPTA has basically murdered FBREF by forcing them to remove almost the entirety of their stats. This sucks. This sucks so much. I'm so angry. FBREF was basically the only halfway decent thing we had as football fans and they stole it from us. I know on the scale of everything happening in the US right now, this is very low on the rank of atrocities, but in my household today, it's number one on the list.

Leicester City were hit with a 6 point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules for the 3 year period ending with the 2023-24 season. Leicester were in the Premier League for the first 2 years of the period and they argued thst the EFL had no authority to impose a penalty for breaches that occurred outside the league. They finished fist in the Championship in 2023-24 but were immediately relegated. The Premier League recommended a 12 point deduction, Leicester argued that a fine was more appropriate. The independent commission essentially split the difference.

The deduction drops them into the relegation battle, now 20th in the Championship table, tied on points with Blackburn and West Brom, ahead on goal differential.

Catarina Macario is out of contract with Chelsea at the end of the season. The San Diego Wave are the front runners to sign her according to a report on espn.com. The Wave train at a field adjacent to the field she trained on with her youth team after her family moved to SoCal from Brazil.

Chelsea took some heat for not including Macario in their ECL roster, but it was obviously in service of moving her. Their new sporting director setup (sharing with the men) has left that program in a bit of a mess. I really wish that Girma and Thompson weren’t stuck there on long term deals if the thing is going to start to fall apart on them.

Sheffield Wednesday lost a Steel City Derby yesterday at Bramall Lane. In so doing, they became the earliest relegation in Football League history. They’re still on -7 points after an 18 point deduction coupled with 1 win and 8 draws. With 39 points left in the season, the best they can do is 32 which leaves them 2 points short of 21st place West Brom’s current point total.

I’m not sure the massive points deduction thing does what they want it to do, which is give the fans the illusion of a chance to survive penalties. They don’t want to deprive the clubs of ticket revenues, but when it’s that hopeless then fans just stop buying tickets eventually anyway. I know it was done for different reasons, but what happened to Rangers when they went insolvent was more cruel in the short term but also more fair. They just started on the lowest rung in Scotland and had to build back from scratch … without the stupid season in free fall. Now, Scotland has less league levels, so maybe you do a double relegation in the EFL instead, but the current punishment system is just so clunky.

Derby almost made it a couple of years ago. They were docked 21 points in 2021-22 and missed safety by7 points. Had they made it, it would have knocked Reading into relegation who had been docked 6 points.

Speaking of West Brom, they sacked coach Eric Ramsay after 9 winless games in charge. The slipped from 18th to 21st in the table, 1 point ahead of Leicester. They’re search for their 4th coach in the last 14 months.

Neil Warnock is back in a dugout. He was hired by 6th tier Torquay United to keep their promotion hopes alive. He’s been an advisor to the board since 2024 and managed them for 9 matches in 1993. They’re 4th in the National League South table but a 5 game winless run dropped them from 1st to 4th. Only the top team gets the automatic promotion, 2nd and 3rd get a bye to the playoff Semifinal, 4th through 7th play In the quarterfinals.

Giving people priced out of the World Cup a chance to also get gouged to see half of their favorite team’s starting 11 play a practice game in the broiling heat.

Said with the full acknowledgement that I’ve done exactly that no less than three times

So many of our Pasadena Reds are going to those matches, particularly the one with Wrexham at Yankee Stadium. Given the historical ties between the two communities, will probably be quite the emotional occasion for them. Our group leader (now 88) spent nearly two years in Wrexham during the Liverpool Blitz in WWII.

Seriously considering going to Yankee Stadium for that one. We have hockey friends that we also go to plays with and they want to go to a few Broadway shows. So some time in the homeland, soccer, Broadway. Not a bad way to spend a few days.
