Look ... I'm no Liverpool fan and I always that Coote was a terrible ref. I was ever unsurprised when there was some horrid VAR decision and a couple of days later it came out that Coote was the one on the review. White powder and rude comments not withstanding, the guy sucks at his job.

Ligue 1 club Lyon has bee provisionally relegated to Ligue 2 following an audit of their books by the French FA. They have until the end of the season to improve or they’ll be forcibly relegated. It would be the 4th time 2 years that a French club was forcibly relegated, with Bordeaux relegated 2 divisions last summer and Sochaux and Nancy relegated last year. Lyon is owned by John Textor through his Eagle Football Group. He also owns a 45% stake in Crystal Palace, that he’s actively to sell, and Brazilian club Botofoga. He tried to buy Everton earlier this year.

Mo Salah has spoken with the media three times since moving to Anfield in 2017: after getting his 40th goal in all competitions his first season, after winning the Champions League against Spurs, and Sunday after the match. And he chose to talk about his disappointment in his contract situation.

Not the words I wanted to hear but I get it. You'd think they'd have offered him something by now. And it's widely known he really has no great desire to leave, would much rather stay. So, it's up to the club to get this worked out. We'll see.

Welcome to the Fenway Sports Group experience. Wait, you're a Pens fan too, aren't you? You're gonna be super fed up with John Henry, if you aren't already.

The Pens' part? This team was in dire straits a few years ago and doubled down on the Jack Johnson error by bringing in Erik Karlsson. Tried to put a positive spin on it when it happened but as my more astute friends pointed out, it was always a disaster to hand that guy that deal. It's proven to be that. And the Jarry deal was an even bigger mess. And then all the money they've spent on Crosby, Malkin and Letang, only to surround them with ... well I'm not sure what they've been thinking. Seemingly aimless, stuck between the increasingly faded past and a rebuild. It's a train wreck and won't end any time soon.
At least for now, the Reds bring me joy on the regular.

To be fair, the Pens' situation ain't easy. Karlsson was a dumb idea but otherwise they've got so much tied up in Crosby, Malkin and Letang that it's tough to build a proper roster. That's not an FSG problem so much as it's the last gasps of a roster that competed at the highest level for a really long time. It's far easier to re-load in the EPL.

Former USWNT coach Jill Ellis is leaving her current position as President of the NWSL San Diego Wave to become FIFA Chief Football Officer, a newly created position. Shell work with Arsene Wenger, who has been chief if global football development since 2019. FIFA says the position is responsible for “the development and implementation of FIFA’s global football strategy”.

Which conveniently gets her out of San Diego before all their legal issues are resolved. Ellis made a real mess of that front office.

One tournament, two hemispheres, six nations. Welcome to World Cup 2030. The opening three matches in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. The rest to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco!

Celtic won the Scottish Cup in PKs over Rangers. Given that Rangers have flailed around in the Prem this season, that was probably their best chance at silverware. Too bad, so sad.

The "too bad, so sad" part is what had me laughing.
Also, my friend pointed out to me that by claiming the trophy, Celtic moved ahead of Rangers in the all-time trophy count, 118 to 117.

Oh, that sparked a bit of joy as well. No self-respecting Celtic fan was comfortable being behind those guys* in the trophy tally.

*of course, most Celtic fans don't accept the current numbers anyway. Rangers are a completely new organization post-liquidation in 2012 and should have been forced to start from scratch. Not that they've won much since then anyway.
