2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

Welcome to the start of training camp for the Hurricanes 2021-22 season. It's gonna be a wild ride ... probably. Who knows? Either way, here's the brand new home for the misc. non-game related stuff. Please stick to the hockey club and Canes-specific topics, as there will always be an NHL news thread and a garb bag thread for other stuff.

Here's to running the Division championship streak to two.

TDA gets acclimated enough in training camp and the exhibition games that Roddy trusts him alongside Slavin on a top pair? Raanta stays healthy enough to spell off Freddy to the tune of 25-30 games? Jarvis, Drury and Suzuki all show they have the goods to eventually become full time Hurricanes? KK settles in with his fellow Finns in a new environment and has a solid season that is not solely judged by how many points he puts up?

Slavin is 100% going to play 22-24 minutes a game again. I'd be absolutely shocked if Tony D plays anywhere near that much. I don't think 1st pairing minutes are a reasonable expectation for him.

And I have zero idea how Kotkaniemi will eventually settle in, but I absolutely agree that point production isn't the goal in his first year ... despite that contract. Carolina has a solid 1st line, with two options on LW (Svech and Nino). The sweet spot for the new kid is probably going to be either on Trocheck's line or with Staal, but that's going to depend on what he can bring to the table once he settles in. I know for certain that some fans (not this crowd, but some) will expect him to slot right in and start producing ... and maybe he can do that, but I'm expecting a fairly long runway for Kotkaniemi. Brindy likes to play young forwards with Staal until they get their feet under them, and that's where I'd expect this to go early on.

Certainly I expect the Canes D to be fluid this season based on game situations. If we are protecting a lead in the 3rd period, I would expect to see TDA get limited sheltered shifts and Slavin and Pesce being paired up more frequently. If we are down in the 3rd period and need goals? We will see a lot more TDA.

TDA is not going to play 20 minutes a game unless we are playing from behind most of the game OR have a whole lot of PP time. He might play with Slavin quite a bit when he is out there, but he isn't going to be coming over the boards with Slavin all the time.

He surely isn’t getting PK time. Hamilton averaged 1:26 per game on the PK, 5th among dmen behind Pesce (3:08), Slavin (2:43), Skjei (2:41) and Hakanpaa (1:31). By comparison, Bear was at 1:48 and Cole was 1:19. TDA played a total of 3:22 on the PK in 2019-20.

I expect Bear to eat most of Dougie's PK minutes. He's a skate it out of trouble guy, and that fits Carolina's PK scheme pretty well. Cole's always been good at PK, but I assume the Wild were careful with his minutes ... as you should be with an older gentleman. On this D Corps, it wouldn't surprise me if Tony D was a break glass in case of emergency guy on the kill.

One of Carolina's challenges this season will be to avoid overloading Slavin and Pesce. One of the arguments to support splitting them up is that you can more easily spread the workload a bit. You might see DeAngelo with Slavin in offensive situations and Bear with him in defensive situations. Timmy G is going to have his hands full avoiding the temptation to just solve all problems with Slavin and Pesce. It works, but 82 games of that is a big, big ask.

The consolidated broadcast schedule is out, Bally’s Sports South will have 74 regular season games and the 2 Pre-season games against Nashville. The remaining 8 games will be on ABC/ESPN+/Hulu. The Bally’s broadcast team hasnt changed, I guess we’ll see if Abby’s role turns into what Maniscalco was doing before picking up play by play or how her and Willis will handle road games.

Alright, I know you guys know more about streaming options than I do. What's the best option for streaming Bally Sports South and either ESPN+ or Hulu? Thanks in advance for your help.

I don’t think anything has changed for Bally’s so you’re stuck there. You can get a stansalong subscription to ESPN+ for something like $6.99/month. Verizon offers 6 months free with certain wireless plans.

Also keep in mind that ESPN+ takes over for NHL.tv. I suspect they’ll have the same local blackout rules though, that can be gotten around with judicious use of a VPN.

So as far as streaming goes, Center Ice (a/k/a NHL.tv) used to cost about $150 for the season, but now ESPN+, which is the current equivalent, cost, $7/month, which is $49 over a 7-month season. That's a pretty sizeable discount. Do I have that right?

If you want to add in a VPN to get the Canes, you're still probably looking at a monthly cost for the season that's less than what it would cost to bump up your cable or streaming package to add Bally Sports, plus you're then getting a VPN, nearly all NHL games, and all the other stuff that's on ESPN+.

The problem with streaming is that the choices are limited. I think only streaming services under the AT&T umbrella carry Bally. Fubu, Hulu, Sling and YouTube dropped them at least a year ago.

You're right. I have YouTube for $65/month. My options are to get cable (no thanks), bump up to Direct TV Stream (fmr. AT&T) for $20 more per month, or go with ESPN+ and VPN.

Yup ... that's the bottom line. Without traditional cable you have exactly two options to watch those 72 games, one of which is a bit much to ask of normies (the VPN route) while the other shackles you to perhaps the single worst user interface in streaming (AT&Whatever they call themselves this week) ... which SUCKS. And I don't think the team has any say in the matter either way. Their contracts were signed with the Fox regionals, who had respectable carriage options.

The Canes have hired Michael Smith’s replacement. Walt Ruff has joined as Editorial Content Producer & Team Reporter.

Somebody was complaining recently that the Canes hadn't replaced Smitty yet ... here ya go. I know exactly as much about this guy as I did about Michael Smith when he was hired. I'm sure he'll be fine.

That was me who complained. The Canes website was completely bereft of any information. So yes, I’m happy he’s here.
