2021 Hurricanes Post Season/Summer Thread

The Hurricanes should be realizing how good a job Michael Smith did by how little buzz there is out there compared to normal. My Dad was bitching about the fact that he actually had to go seek information on the rookie tournament as opposed to being able to find it at a glance, like usual.
Well ... good or not, they're only gonna pay so much for that position, because it's just an entry level media job. Smith was awesome at it eventually, despite being fairly terrible at first. It's not like the team don't know they have an opening. They'll get it filled eventually.

BTW ... I'm planning to start a new season thread when Camp opens, so get your licks in here while you can. It's been a short but eventful off season.

Agreed! I never fully appreciated what Michael Smith did until I spent some trying to ferret out information on the “internets” this weekend. Where ever he landed, wishing the best to Mike Smith, his wife and the new baby!

He hasn’t updated his Twitter or LinkedIn bios, so who knows?

Heading into camp, Sara Civian created tiers for the roster this season. There are 19 locks, and I’m sure you can guess them all, and 3 listed as ”more likely than not” which are Lorentz, Leivo and Brendan Smith. That’s a 22 man roster, 13 forwards, 7 dmen, 2 goalies. Drury and Cotton at forward and Gelinas, Lajoie and Keane on D are “bubble/potential roster battle” players. Everyone else is a dark horse. Remember that Jarvis has to make the Canes or he goes back to Portland for 1 more year.

I don't see any way shy of injury that Carolina breaks camp without Brendan Smith. Honestly, you don't sign a guy that that without having a specific role for him in the first place. The rest of those bubble D will be fighting it out for priority call up spots, IMO. The way the summer has shaken out, you're really only looking at open competition for the 12th and 13th forward slots. That's yet another sea change that Canes fans seem to be struggling with as the club shifts gears to having real ambition. We have loved seeing our scrappy young guys come to camp to get their shot at the big club like Mickey Rooney putting on a Broadway show in his backyard, but that's just not really how things go with teams that are serious about contending. It's gone from camp being the Wild West to something more carefully curated.

It's also a reminder of just how Mom and Pop Carolina's management was back in the old days.

And I really don’t see much of a battle for the 12th and 13th forward spots. It would take overwhelming camps from Drury, Cotton, whomever, combined with disastrous camps/injuries from Lorentz and Leivo. Drury and Cotton are waivers exempt, Lorentz and Leivo are not, and there is probably a high likelihood that they’d get claimed.

Yup. It's more "position battle" than position battle, honestly. Injuries, aside ... of course. Somebody almost always gets hurt in camp/pre season.

I'm somewhat intrigued at what Gelinas will look like back in North America as a 30 year old vet since you know injuries will strike at some point and that first callup on D could still play a role at some juncture. The guy actually put up a few decent NHL seasons and might be a safer option over Lajoie or Keane or Chatfield. Brendan Smith should be that swingman seventh D or extra forward that can be inserted into the lineup when needed and is also a nice physical player if the need arises playing some of these Metro teams that like to get stupid at times.

You realize how old we must be picking up Andy Hardy references?!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Good lord, those were old movies when we were watching them.

The last Andy Hardy movie was released in 1946 when Mickey Rooney was 26 (yes, I Googled it). That‘s getting close to Dwind and AH territory, many years before I showed up.

anyone been to columbus for a game? probably going to see Canes there next month or maybe Jan 1st.
I have. It's a nice enough arena and the shopping district around it is nice ... if the weather Is good. That expletive deleted cannon can die in a tire fire though, and frankly Columbus' fans have always acted like they've won something for no specific reason. Still ... it's fine.

I was born in 46 and am 39.
My parents would have called that “new math”.

Of course, my mother never got older than 29, which she found curious when I turned 30. “How can I have a 30 year old son when I’m only 29?”

BJs Arena not in a cow pasture not near anything? Except a Wendys. What a concept!!! Must be some smart people there. And yes I know OSU built their own place on campus recently since they were not willing to share the place with BJs.
