My parents would have called that “new math”.

Of course, my mother never got older than 29, which she found curious when I turned 30. “How can I have a 30 year old son when I’m only 29?”
Old math think Jack Benny.

BJs Arena not in a cow pasture not near anything? Except a Wendys. What a concept!!! Must be some smart people there. And yes I know OSU built their own place on campus recently since they were not willing to share the place with BJs.
If only our government fathers had had the foresight to knock down Central Prison 2.5 decades ago ... because the Blue Jackets got VERY fortunate with the timing on that building. Otherwise they were headed to ... wait for it ... the State Fairgrounds near what became Mapfre Stadium. Which the first time I visited it was surrounded by ... wait for it ... an industrial area, some State buildings and a couple of fast food joints. Timing matters more than smarts sometimes.

also they did not have the buckeye club (or whatever it's called ) running the show on the arena construction. Since for a long time the CA was essentially the WPC with a few token other guys added in. Now it's no longer like that .

Man, if ESA/RBC/WTF it is now was where Central is, I could walk across the street to games.
Well, except for that pesky railroad track!

Look ... it's all timing and circumstances or they well could have been trying to build an arena that included Ohio State. You keep attributing motive and intention to things that are 90% about other stuff. OSU's new basketball arena was a done deal by the time the Blue Jackets were a thing, and it wasn't designed for that kind of multi-sport use. Not to mention that the location doesn't suit a pro club. The Hurricanes wandered into town here at just the right moment to shoehorn themselves into State's arena plans. Columbus further caught a break when Ohio decided to close the big prison and sell the land. Or else, as I mentioned, the Blue Jackets 100% were heading for the Ohio State Fairgrounds near the old soccer facility. Circumstances ... not forethought

And ironically the State of NC is open to the idea of closing Central and building a new, modern prison out in the ex-burbs somewhere. A couple of decades too late for our purposes, but that location would have been outstanding for both State and the Canes.

Can't imagine what that land would go for. Former partner, who is majority owner of our office/land, has told me he's been offered $1M for our .2 acre site; the little gray building around the corner from Charlie Goodnight's.
They could probably build 2 pokies for the land value.

looks to me Ohio fairgrounds are not in a fringe area cow pasture,. it's close to OSU campus and FB stadium, not on the edge of town . and yes it's not downtown but it's not that far.

As I recall, I didn't call it a cow pasture but rather said it was surrounded by much the same kind of industrial and public service buildings we find around our own arena ... or at least it was 20-ish years ago before the area was largely re-developed. And the land where the Raleigh ESA was built wasn't a cow pasture either. Not sure where the cow pasture plays into this unless you're bitching about the Vet school, in which case ... stop. That thing means more to this city that any stupid sports franchise.

When my vet (who is a NC State grad) ran out of treatment options for our last dog, who had an autoimmune disease, he sent us to the Vet School. And they saved his life.
They also serve the NC and other regional and public zoos, the pork and ranching industry in the Southeast and all manner of other industries ... in addition to saving our fur babies. That vet school is worth three sportsball franchises.

One of my dogs was not so fortunate, and we ended up having to put him down there. The staff couldn't have been more caring or supportive.
