Back in the good old days....
You wouldn’t find a head hunter like Wilson. Either no team would pick him or if he did get picked wouldn’t last long. The players policed the game.
I was looking back to the 60’s and early/mid 70’s.
players didn’t use sticks,,we kept them at or below waist level, we played hard but somewhat fair never targeting a head Unless it was with fists. The only vulnerable players were the ones that were carrying the puck up the ice with their head down.
Plus, the heavier sticks of that era made it VERY apparent you were holding an actual weapon in your hands. Helmets and other protective gear play a role too. When everybody's melon was exposed, the guys were a lot less casual about targeting an opponent's head. Eric Lindros talks a lot about how the extra padding and hard shell protective gear makes it easier to crush somebody with an elbow or shoulder, because you don't feel it. Sometimes we actually free guys up to cause more damage in the effort to protect them.I was looking back to the 60’s and early/mid 70’s.

Very correct JB.Plus, the heavier sticks of that era made it VERY apparent you were holding an actual weapon in your hands. Helmets and other protective gear play a role too. I grew up playing football with fairly flimsy helmets and shoulder pads that were little more than ABS plastic stitched over closed cell foam padding. We didn't lead with our heads because you are 100% going to hurt yourself as much (or more) as you would the other guy. We hit through the body mass because that was the only you could tackle without getting hurt. Today? Screw that. Guys throw themselves around like freaking missiles, confident that they're protected. It only takes a single generation for that stuff to become completely ingrained in any contact sport.Very correct JB.
we had cotton padding in our jerseys for should and elbow padding, no forearm padding at all, no helmets, etc. basically it was shin guards, cup and gloves. our skate boots were softer kangaroo leather and our skate blades were razor sharp Sheffield steel.
I mean ... there are plenty of head shots (and concussions) in Rugby and they don't wear anything more than padding on their heads ... mostly they wear nothing on their heads. There are no easy answers to these kinds of problems despite what people on the internet say.some people say to stop head hits in FB go back to leather helmets. Good idea but it won't happen.
What kind of pay do pro rugby guys get? Anywhere near NFL level? I know premier league soccer guys can make a lot.
Probably rightI imagine that the regional deals stay in place?
