2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

I mean, the combination of the fact that Gavrikov isn't actually all that good and the bonus structure gives me all sorts of feelings about this. Suffice to say, this seems dumb.

Pierre LeBrun says that Pat Brisson, the agent for Pierre-Luc Dubois, told the Jets that PLD isn’t interested in signing an extension, even a 1 year bridge deal. He wants to be traded.

Blackhawks re-sign Andreas Athanasiou, 2 years/$8.5 million. He was coming off a 1 year/$3 million contract.

No shock there. PLD continues his career long quest for a coach who will just let him do his thing.

May as well. Athanasiou has never done all that much despite his talent level, but they need guys who can convincingly man the top 6 while they rebuild through the draft.

The Canadian Revenue Authority (CRA) is challenging tax deductions for a form of pension plan for high earners called a Retirement Compensation Agreement (RCA). It looks analogous to a 401(k). Basically, that allows high earners to shield part of their taxable income while they’re in a high tax bracket and pay it out after they’ve retired and in a lower tax bracket. The top bracket in Canada is 53.53% for incomes over $221,708.

In the case of Jose Bautista, the CRA is claiming that the retirement account does not meet the definition of a RCA. In the cases of Russell Martin and Josh Donaldson, the CRA agrees with the validity of the account but how the deductions were calculated, based on how much time they spent in the US and Canada.

While these cases are for former Toronto Blue Jays, a ruling in the 3 cases could impact how Canadian teams attract non-Canadian athletes. Martin’s and Donaldson’s cases are being heard together next month. That case will have the biggest impact on non-Canadian athletes because the argument is related to the calculation of the deduction based on how much time they spent in Canada. Bautista’s case seems like bad lawyering/tax advice.

On Monday night when I was roaming the strip here in Vegas, wondering how I got talked into visiting this cesspool of scumbags and ding dongs, I realized that having a game end at 9:00 is brilliant for the fans. So many Golden Knights fans flooded the strip afterwards, pumped up on a big win with the night just beginning in the city.

Better you than me, man. I probably would have puked on the pavement just for general principle...then had a word with whomever arranged such a business trip....Good thing they weren't playing the Sabres, I guess. ...The scumbag quotient would absolutely be off the charts.

Elliotte Friedman says that Ryan Huska will be named next coach of the Calgary Flames. He’s been a Flames assistant for the last 5 years after 4 years as head coach of their AHL affiliate.

Hockey Twitter lacks self awareness, but I'm less entertained by it than you are. I find it freaking depressing.

Elliotte Friedman and Frank Seravalli are both reporting that the Devils and Jackets are working on a sign and trade with Damon Severson. Devils would sign him to a 8 year/$6.25 AAV deal and send him to Columbus. No word yet on what the return would be. The Devils have a boatload of cap space but only 12 players under contract, only 5 forwards.

Yeah, Serverson is just surplus to requirements with Dougie and Luke Hughes both in the lineup for next season, and way too expensive to be a third pairing puck mover. I think they might move away from Graves too. As to what they need in return for Severson, I don't think they're gonna get it from Columbus. So, probably a placeholder forward and a middling pick/prospect or something.

The Jackets are sending a 2023 3rd rounder to the Devils, it was originally Calgary’s pick, #80 overall.

The metro is going to get tougher.
Philly is in tank mode ... not that you'd notice the difference between that and what they did last season. And again, I'll start worrying about Columbus when they go find abut three NHL centers and stop playing Erik Gudbranson 20 minutes a game. Until then ... whatever.
