2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

Mark Messier and leadership don’t belong in the same sentence. I remembered how he lied at the end of his Rangers contract, telling everyone that he was coming back. He signed in Vancouver instead. Then he was human excrement in Vancouver before lying at the end of that contract too. Then he sued them. In his last 7 years, his teams missed the playoffs 7 times. He captained Vancouver to 2 of their worst seasons ever. He captained Rangers 2.0 to 4 seasons between 69 - 80 points.

The award is a joke. That it’s named after him and he has the only vote is a bigger joke.

Weirdly sedate game Game 5 in the Florida/Boston series. The Bruins got the 2-1 win on the road behind a nice finish from Geekie, a standout performance from Swayman and a game winner that featured a failed goaltender interference challenge. Honestly, Mo had bees in his bucket for challenging that, since his own defenseman was the one who made contact with Bob's stick. But there was very little argy bargy and Tkachuk was all but invisisble out there. That series is also sitting at 3-2 and rumors of Boston's demise are about as accurate as Carolina's

He did, but for my money the Panthers never really got in gear. Barkov's line was good but otherwise they struggled to get meaningful possession.

Noticing a lot of former Canes playing key roles on playoff teams.
Michael Russo had an article on The Athletic about Gustav Forsling. I had forgotten that Dudley and Krepelka went to the Panthers after they left the Canes. While the Panthers spent much of the 2020-21 training camp grabbing every dman they could find off waivers, they knew a lot about Forsling.

Ya gotta stop with the argy bargy. I have Pulling Mussels From a Shell stuck in my head again!

Yup. Carolina has done a good job in the post-Rutherford era scouting both amateur and pro players and have been active in moving fringe players for veterans. So you're going to end up with a fair amount of depth guys floating around the league. Forsling being the biggest fish that slipped through the cracks, of course. Shame the Canes couldn't have found a spot for him since he was so close to finding his NHL game when he was waived. I still miss Luostarinen too. It was obvious that Louie was going to be a solid bottom 6 guy for a long, long run but that Trocheck trade was good for the team at the time. They had to get rid of Huala before Brind'Amour killed the guy and Tro was a big step up in class. Losing Louie and Wallmark was the price ... and Priskie, I guess. He never did make a dent as a pro.

Priskie played 4 games for the Panthers in 2021-22. Since then, he’s cycled through the Slugs, Ducks and Caps organizations without playing in the NHL. Wallmark onky played 7 games for the Panthers after the trade and was non-tendered. He signed with the Blackhawks who waived him, then traded him back to the Panthers. They non-tendered him again but he had already signed with CSKA Moscow, played 1 season there and has played the last 2 seasons in the Swiss League. It’s a shame, he had 2 decent seasons here as a bottom 6 center, scoring 21 goals in 141 games.

Priskie was one of those guys who makes you wary of puck moving college defensemen. 2nd to Cale freaking Makar for the Hobie Baker at Quinnipiac, decent frame, pretty good skater, right shot, not horrible in his own zone ... looked like he had the stuff to round into a bottom 4 guy pretty quickly but he just never got there at the pro level. He was certainly worth a shot out of college, but it turned out Carolina was dead right to throw him in to the pile in that Trocheck trade.

Wally? He had the tools to play NHL hockey, but not the body. Dude had bird bones. A moderate breeze could knock him over. He'll live forever in Canes lore since he's in the background of every picture I've ever seen of Svech scoring that first lacrosse goal.

Utah goalie Connor Ingram won the Masterton. His recovery from OCD is a great success story but it feels like he should have won last year.

At least he admits he’s a head hunting shitlord

Brad Marchand

“"People don't want to say it, but part of playoffs is trying to hurt every player on the other team. The more guys you take out, the more advantage your team has," said Marchand, speaking for the first time after leaving Game 3 against the Florida Panthers with an injury.”

Well I guess it’s ok he got hurt by a cheap underhanded dirty unsportsmanlike Paul Maurice-approved play. The dirtbags deserve each other. The league deserves it. I hope it goes 7 and ends with a full on riot on the ice that flows into the stands and most of the players and coaches on both teams get arrested. Well only the dirtbags, but that’s the majority of both of those teams. Sleep with dogs you get fleas.
