2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

I work for a company that makes that stuff. I’m in the Spine division, so we make replacement parts, the screws and rods that hold them together and the instruments for them. We have a cadaver lab and a mock OR to bring in doctors to train them on the new parts and instruments.

The “kid” that grew up next door to me is now an orthopedic surgeon and the team doctor for a couple of colleges. He posts short videos of some surgeries on Instagram, primarily shoulders and elbows but I can’t watch them.
I agree on the can’t watch them part, was thinking of having the ACDF surgery a few years back, the same sort of thing Kris Letang had done, it was brutal to watch and certainly had me thinking twice about ever going through with it. I know PuckingLamplighter knows a thing or two about spinal surgery and fusion procedures and they did sound brutal to endure.

Even your every day knee or hip replacement surgery is brutal to watch. It's not a delicate procedure. I've watched plenty. It's not for the squeamish.
An orthopedic sturgeon once told me that I'd be awake when he replaces my hip (that was in 2011). The fuck I will be! I don't want to see it, nor do I want to hear it. Put my ass all the way out for that shit!

My dad was an orthopaedic surgeon. I recall going into his clinic and seeing a fellow on a table. It looked like my dad was tightening an ankle screw with something that very much looked a Craftsman ratchet wrench. I will tell you this, watching him carve a Christmas roast, a crown roast, or a Thanksgiving Turkey was an art.

I was able to play hockey a year after having C-4,5,& 6 fused together. I would have lost the use of my left arm without it, so it wasn't much of a choice to have the procedure done or not. Other procedures I've been through were more painful, but being able to (sort of) get back to a normal (like I know what normal is...) existence. I'm fortunate that the neurosurgeon who performed by spinal fusion was excellent at his job. Can't say the same thing for the guy who did my two shoulder surgeries. He operated twice because he {Polar's word}ed up the first one. No matter what, I'm happy for every day I get.

There was an game played in Moscow today between NHL and KHL all stars. The Canes were well represented, as shown in this pic of Koochie, Svech, Nikishin, and Orlov.

Former Hurricanes winger Sergei Tolchinsky is behind Kochetkov in that picture. He is having himself a nice KHL career and was second in scoring for SKA St. Petersberg behind Nikishin last season. Alex Galchenyuk was on that team too along with former Canes winger Valentin Zykov. Galchenyuk has moved on to another KHL team for this coming season, but we will see what Kuznetsov brings to SKA this coming season if he really signs there. Zykov and Tolchinsky are still both going to be there with Nikishin. Dman Nikita Zaitsev will be playing there as well.

I saw something a few days ago that SKA had to cut salary to sign Kuznetsov, I guess there is a salary cap in the KHL?

Yeah, who knew? Aside from people who pay close attention to the KHL, of course. Which ain't me. A bit of quick internet digging indicates that maybe they've always had a cap ... or that they've had a cap for about 5 or 6 years? This conflicting info is actually reassuring, since all info out of the KHL is conflicting. Either way, their cap seems to adjust up and down much more irratically than the NHL's. Also, this being Russia, there's a huge list of things that are technically compensation that don't count against the cap, so it's a much softer cap than the NHL's.

The big oligarch is a big SKA fan, so I’m not sure what the problem is…
I'm not sure that there's an actual problem. Given the list of exceptions, it might just be a matter of negotiating a package of non-cap perks. That probably takes longer to figure out, but I'm not sure why there's some sort of rush other than the fact that the trolls who run hockey blogs and click bait sites need content.

Apparently Nashville Dman Spencer Stastney was the first player to get to arbitration this time around. Per Elliott Friedman, Nashville's request is 2 years/2 ways at $775k (NHL minimum) each season with minor league salaries of $125k and $175k. Stastney's ask is 1 year, 1 way, $950k

Stastney played 20 NHL games last season and had 2 Goals and 2 Assists and was +9. He went for 5 G 15 A +27 in 44 AHL games with Milwaukee.

We didn't really talk specifics of the options with Necas and the Canes via arbitration. I definitely don't think Necas would want anything more than a 1 year arbitration result so he could go out, put up a big season, and go back to the arbitration well with a better case. Not so sure how the Canes feel, I guess we will find out eventually (maybe).

Columbus named Dean Evason as their new head coach. Their old coach, Pascal Vincent, was named head coach of the AHL Laval Rocket last week.

Honestly, Vincent's only issue was not getting them to any consistent level defensively. Given the roster constraints he had, they really needed to buckle down and grind it out on D and they just never felt like they had that kind of fight in them as a unit. Maybe a lot of that was down to how the whole mess of a season started, but they played like they were doomed from pretty much Halloween on. I can see giving him another shot at the AHL level.

And if you're stuck in conventional NHL thinking mode, Evason is about as good a hire as you could hope for. Nothing fancy, but he's only lightly damaged goods. And Columbus is 100% shopping in the returns aisle.

Yeah, I'm sure Necas will ask for a max comparable price for a single season while the Canes will ask for the low end of the comparable curve for 2 seasons. How the arbitrator rules is always a bit of a mystery but Necas' rollercoaster numbers won't help his argument. Arbitrators tend to stick to mostly counting stats for offensive players. That bodes fairly well for Carolina, because in this case it's the player who will be pushing to be paid for potential. He could possible argue that the Canes reduced his output by reducing his opportunities, but this is a team that's been a Cup contender for his entire contract so they'd have liked nothing more than for him to pop off with 40 goals.
