2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

We touched on the tax implications of some of the UFA signings…Guentzel, Skjei, Stamkos. There is an article on The Athletic today that notes rulings from Canadian tax authorities that could make it difficult for Canadian teams to compete for free agents. It involves taxation of signing bonuses and Retirement Compensation Agreements (RCA). A RCA is a salary deferral for non-Canadians, where they defer payment of taxes on that income until the RCa is paid out, when they’d presumably be in a lower tax bracket. The issue of RCA taxes came up last year when Blue Jays players Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin received reassessments on RCA deductions. The Canadian Tax Court heard their arguments last year but hasn’t ruled yet.

The article also has a chart of the combined tax impact of a $10 million annual salary. Aside from the 5 states with no state income tax, the Canes have the 3rd lowest combined tax rate, behind Colorado and Utah.

Yeah, the Triangle market is quite competitive in the cost of being a high income earner category, even when you factor in non-income taxes and other fees. And I know I'm a broken record on the subject, but ignoring the actual tax structure of no income tax states is sort of stupid. I know it makes it vastly more complicated and difficult to put in a pretty chart, so we just ignore it.

The owners of the United Center announced plans for a mixed use campus around the arena. It’s expected to take 10 years to complete and cost $7 billion. It will include green space, projected as a park on top of a parking garage, mixed income housing, a music hall, etc.

7 billion is ... a number. Holy crap.

The thing is ... because of McDavid, they're probably going to screw around and win a Cup sooner or later even with the big pile of nothing these awful clowns contribute. They came danged close this year with a GM that may or may not have been sentient, an assistant coach on the bench that was put there simply to make their alumni shut up and a roster made up of 4 legit players.

I wish McDavid or Draisaitl at any point would say " I'm not playing for that guy" and the team would have dropped the idea in an instant.

Not sure about Draisaitl, but McDavid isn't one to make that kind of call. By all accounts he's signed off on most if not all of the low character moves the team has made in recent years.

Slugs avoid arbitration with goalie UPL, he gets 5 years/$4.75 million AAV. Year 1 is $2.75 million salary, $2 million signing bonus, the rest of the years are $4.75 million salary. He gets a 5 team NTC in years 3-5.

That's a heck of a commitment given the way that organization has always talked about Levi. At least that have a two year window to move him.

Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Mat Ishbia expresses interest in bring the NHL back to the market...

His teams play in an arena owned by the city but operated by limited partnership affiliated with the Suns. Maybe this is a ploy for a new downtown arena? Footprint Center was built in 1992 and most recently renovated in 2020. But it was unsuitable for hockey when the Coyotes played there from 1996-2003 and without the commitment of a new arena, I don’t like his chances.

I feel like this IS a part of a plan to get an arena upgrade and better control of the arena. Ishbia had been approached a million times to get engaged in the Coyotes mess but never showed any interest before.

Travis Konecny signs a 8 year extension with the Flyers. It kicks in next season with a $8.75 million AAV. He’s headed into the last season of a 5 year contract with a $5.5 million AAV.

Patrik Laine has been cleared to return from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. That should start the rumors anew.

I mean, he's GOING to move. It's only a matter of time. So at least they'll be rumors about a real thing.

Wild signed dman Brock Faber to 8 year, $8.5 million AAV extension. Last season was his first full NHL season, he played 2 regular season and 6 playoff games in 2022-23 after his college season ended. He had 8 goals, 39 assists.
