We touched on the tax implications of some of the UFA signings…Guentzel, Skjei, Stamkos. There is an article on The Athletic today that notes rulings from Canadian tax authorities that could make it difficult for Canadian teams to compete for free agents. It involves taxation of signing bonuses and Retirement Compensation Agreements (RCA). A RCA is a salary deferral for non-Canadians, where they defer payment of taxes on that income until the RCa is paid out, when they’d presumably be in a lower tax bracket. The issue of RCA taxes came up last year when Blue Jays players Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin received reassessments on RCA deductions. The Canadian Tax Court heard their arguments last year but hasn’t ruled yet.
The article also has a chart of the combined tax impact of a $10 million annual salary. Aside from the 5 states with no state income tax, the Canes have the 3rd lowest combined tax rate, behind Colorado and Utah.
