2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

$14 million?! And Connor's contract is up after this season and the next one, right?
End of the 25-26 season, yes. He's on a $12.5 million cap hit, so the Oilers will have $26.5 million of their cap space tied up in two guys for the 25-26 season. Even if the Cap goes up to something in the $92-94 million range for that season, they'll have well over a quarter of their cap tied up in two players. I mean, it's a way to go I guess.

McDavid has this year and next at $12.5 million. So next year depending on how much the cap increases above the current $88 million, McDavid, Draisaitl and Nurse will take up about 40% of the cap. And Nurse is signed for 5 years after this at $9.25 million. A buyout won’t save them much except for the first year, he has bonus payouts in each of the last 4 years. So if they buy him out next summer, they’ll save almost $9 million in 25-26 and almost $1 million in 26-27. But then they only save $160k for the next 3 years and carry a little over $1 million in dead cap through 34-35.

Elliott Friedman is reporting that Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz will try to catch on with Toronto on a PTO

Here is the breakdown of Draisaitl’s contract per PuckPedia. It’s front loaded, but not egregiously so, 57% is paid out in the first 4 years. But it’s 8 million salary and $104 million in signing bonus. That’s a pretty big nut to shell out on July 1. They already have $10 million in signing bonuses on the books for next season between McDavid, Hyman and RNH. They’re lucky that Nurse doesn’t get a bonus until 26-27.

Yr 1 1M Salary & 15.5M Signing Bonus
Yr 2 1M & 15.5M SB
Yr 3 1M & 15.5M SB
Yr 4 1M & 13M SB
Yr 5 1M & 11.5M SB
Yr 6 1M & 11M SB
Yr 7 1M & 11M SB
Yr 8 1M & 11M SB

Wait till Evan Bouchard gets paid...I could see him easily surpassing Nurse and that will essentially be the new Core 4 Leafs-like saga only worse in Edmonton.

Bouchard is already on a bridge deal at $3.9 million. If they don’t lock him up before the contract expires, someone will sign him to an offer sheet and force their hand.

Core 4 and one of them is Nurse? HOT pass. They've still got north of $10 million a season tied up in the Nuge and Hyman for multiple years as well. At least Hyman is producing. I guess it boils down to whether or not you can win if you have two, two-man forward lines and one defense pairing with everything else filled in with whatever stuff you turn up between the cushions couch surfing the rest of the league. There won't be a cast-off scallywag on a behavior related discount that won't land in Edmonton*. Have fun with that.

* I'm honestly surprised that the Oilers didn't at least kick the tires on DeAngelo.

They have Hyman at $5.5 million until 2028 and RNH at $5.125 million until 2029. Hyman has a NMC this season and next, a 8 team trade list in 26-27 and a 10 team trade list in 27-28. RNH has a full NMC each year.

Some other miscellaneous news

Matt Cullen was elected to the US Hockey Hall of Fame. Cullen is one of 2 US born players to play at least 1,500 NHL games (Chelios is the other). Kevin Stevens and Brianna Decker were also elected. Major Frederic McLaughlin was elected posthumously. He had been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 1963, so I’m not sure why it took 60 years to b elected to the US HOF. The 2002 US Paralympic Sled Hockey Ream was also elected

Marc Staal has joined the Rangers as a development coach. He’ll work with defensemen throughout the organization.

Utah has released their home uniform.

My reaction: Eh. I guess. Color me underwhelmed. I think they should replace the diagonal UTAH with the circle logo that you see below.
