2023-24 Premier League Thread

I have a Brummie neighbor who feels the same way about your Villans. He hasn’t had much to cheer about this century.
Yeah, well ... only one of those teams has ever had fans come out of the stands to physically assault opposing players ON THE PITCH, and it ain't Villa. Acting like Mexico fans is generally bad for your reputation.

West Ham manager David Moyes is out of contract this summer and will not be extended. They are hiring Julen Lopetegui as his replacement. Hes been out of work since last August when he and Wolves parted ways just before the season started.

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley hit the skids today, they were relegated after losing to Spurs. Luton might as well be done too, they trail Nottingham Forest by 3 points but are 13 goals behind. Any Nottingham point, either today against Chelsea or next week against Burnley sends Luton down.

If Luton does go down, it will be the first time since 1997-98 that all 3 promoted clubs were relegated the next year. That year, it was Bolton, Barnsley and Crystal Palace. That’s the last time Barnsley was in the Prem.

Villa apparently down to eleven available senior players for the Liverpool match. Just limping across the finish line at this point. If Emery doesn't win manager of the season, I don't understand the point of having awards.

What a freaking comeback from Villa yesterday. Down and out and trailing Liverpool by 2 goals and BAM. Duran happens twice and they remain alive for 4th. If City can beat Spurs today, they'll clinch. With 11 healthy senior players.

Which happened, as Spurs rolled over meekly, handing 4th to Villa and likely a 4th straight Premier League championship to Man City. Sadly, it looks like they’ll hold on to a European spot, needing only a point at relegated Sheffield to clinch 5th. Newcastle and Chelsea are 6 points back with 2 matches left and have a better goal differential than Spurs.

If Son gets that late one past the backup keeper, then it could have been a much different final match day but I'd be lying if I said I'm not relieved to have it done. The extra Champions League dosh will get Villa out of FFP jail this summer, if nothing else. Being back in Europe's biggest competition for the first time since 1983 IS sweet though.

Final match day of the 23-24 season in the Prem may be drained of most of its drama this year with relegation all but settled and the title race sitting squarely in Man City's hands, but there's still some sorting to do. Villa claimed the last Champions League spot, but the rest of the European slots are in play. Chelsea's late push has them in position to nip Spurs for 5th ... which won't matter if Man City win the FA Cup and add a second Europa League spot for the EPL. Should City lose to United at Wembley, then 5th place gets Europa and 6th place gets Conference League. If City win then 5th and 6th both go to Europa while 7th sneaks into the Conference. Currently, that's Tottenham (5th), Chelsea (6th) and Newcastle (7th), but they are all 3 points apart and within reason on goal diff. Note that Spurs will be hard to catch as their final match is against the worst defensive team in modern history in Sheffield. Otherwise, Arsenal are left hoping for a miracle from West Ham to put the big hardware back in play

Leeds punched their ticket to Wembley, beating Norwich like a drum 4-0 at Elland Road after playing a scoreless draw last week. Southampton hosts West Brom today in the 2nd leg, also coming off a scoreless draw.

Southampton takes the 2nd leg at home, 3-1 and will face Leeds next Sunday at Wembley. Both have only been down for 1 season.

If de Zerbi ends up at Bayern Munich next year, I think that will be a mistake for him. For one, his teams have had issues breaking down teams that don't engage and sit in a low block, and he's going to see a LOT of that if he ends up at a bigger club like Bayern. Secondly, there's a reason that all of Bayern's top coaching candidates have passed. Almost hilariously any time a manager was said to be their target, they immediately reaffirmed they were not leaving their current job.

Apparently that’s dead in the water. But the search is a mess, as recently as earlier this week, there were talks with Tuchel to extend his stay.

There's nothing funnier than pushing your manager out and then realizing nobody wants the job and then going back and saying, hey about that... This is going to work out hilariously bad.

Huge congrats to Aston Villa for finishing 4th and earning a spot in Champions League next year….Tottenham had their dips during the season, but over the course of 38 games that’s the best football we’ve played since peak Poch, and it’s no small feat to have outdone over the full season given how phenomenal our peak football was when we were firing on all cylinders.

Fact you guys played to the level you did when healthy, and then stayed afloat when injuries devastated you, speaks to the calibre of team you’ve got. So again, big kudos on hanging on till the end. Well deserved. As one of the few teams to succeed without having infinite funds provided to them to buy anyone & everyone they want ala City, Chelsea, Newcastle, United, etc….I think it speaks even more highly to what you accomplished doing things within the spirit of the game and spirit of the league. 👏🏼

You guys played some gorgeous football along the way, as well…..will be fun seeing how the added CL money is utilized this offseason.

So Man City makes history as the first time to win 4 straight First Division championships. And it’s 7 of the last 8 for them too. They have a chance at a 2nd straight double with the FA Cup final next weekend too. Arsenal put up a good fight, City had to win their last 9 to pip them. And it wasn’t Arsenal’s performance against the Big 6, it was the bottom half that did them in. They earned 1 point from Fulham, split with West Ham, didn’t earn a point (or score a goal) against Villa.

Liverpool and Villa earn the other 2 Champions League, Spurs get the Europa League, Chelsea gets the Conference Lewgue unless City wins the FA Cup, then they’d get the Europa League spot. Newcastle, Man U, West Ham and Crystal Palace round out the top half of the table. Palace equaled their best ever finish by winning 6 of their last 7.

At the foot, Nottingham Forest survived the 4 point deduction and stayed up. All 3 of the promoted clubs are headed back down for thr first time since 1997-98.

Erling Haaland won the Golden Boot with 27 goals, 5 more than Cole Palmer. David Raya won the Golden Gloves with 16 clean sheets, 3 more than Jordan Pickford and Phil Foden was voted Palyer of the Year.

You're including Villa in the bottom half??? What are you, Sky sports? This big six thing is ridiculous, like beating Man U is some sort of an achievement (I don't want to talk about our results against them this year so I'm just going to move on quickly).
