2023-24 Premier League Thread

I like that Spurs still have to face all three and we only have Liverpool left. I really hope we return the favor to Liverpool for potentially screwing the coefficient and forcing us to have to finish forth to guarantee champions league play.

I really wish that Bournemouth game was at Villa Park, since it comes on a short turnaround after the game in France on Thursday. Either way, I'd be happy with a solid 5th place finish, especially given the ridiculous run of injuries. So I'm not all that worked up about it either way.

Also, as an aside I still haven't gotten to watch the Villa vs Arsenal match cause the Peacock app doesn't want to load on my TV for some reason. Looking forward to that eventually.

Now that I've seen it, I disagree and am glad I watched the whole thing. First half set up the second half, plus we had the two shots that hit the woodwork three times total and I'm still not sure how they didn't go in. Just an absolute delight of a match and watching all the Arsenal fans leave ten minutes early while the Villa fans sung "You've seen the Villa, now fuck off" was one of the best moments of the season.

Yeah ... I was kidding, mostly. But either way it was an absolute delight to watch, especially considering they were missing their two best defensive mids. Honestly, if you'd have told me the Villa would march into the Emirates without Luiz and come out with a clean sheet I'd have assumed that Martinez had an insane game in net. He made some nice stops, but that wasn't it really. They just choked the life out of that game as it went along.

Awesome ... great stadium, great fan base, great kit. It's been a long road back to a proper division but they've earned it

Leicester is back in the Prem, with QPR beating Leeds today. The Foxes can finish no lower than 2nd. Leeds has 1 match left and a 1 point lead on Ipswich in 3rd who have 3 left. If Ipswich win out, they finish first if Leicester don’t win their last 2.

League One is finished, after 2 years down, Derby is back in the Championship, finishing 2nd to Portsmouth. Bolton, Peterborough, Oxford United and Barnsley are in the playoffs. Cheltenham, Fleetwood, Port Vale and Carlisle are relegated.

Liverpool found their replacement for Jurgen Klopp, hiring Arne Slot from Feyenoord. He's been there for 3 seasons, winning the Eredivisie last year, the Dutch Cup this year and was the losing finalist to Roma in the Conference League in 2022. They’re 2nd in the Eredivisie with 3 matches left this season. He's bringing his coaching staff with him. Liverpool paid in the neighborhood of €11 million.

League Two is complete. Stockport County, Wrexham and Mansfield Town get the promotion spots. MK Dons, Doncaster, Crewe Alexandra and Crawley Town are in the playoffs. Sutton United and Forest Green Rovers are relegated.

Speaking of finished, Sheffield United’s stay in the Premier League is finished. They lost to Newcastle 5-1 yesterday. They’ll be greeted with a points deduction when they get to the Championship, from their last stay there.

This year's team simply cannot defend at a Premiere League level no matter how tight they box up their lines.

Seems like they took their time, evaluated options, identified the guy they wanted to target and got the deal done fairly quickly. Is he the right guy? Who knows, but it was a professional looking process from the outside.

Leicester beat Preston this afternoon to lock up first place in the Chsmpionship.

Further down the pyramid, there will be a first time team in the Football League, the National League playoff final is Bromley v. Solihull Moors. Bromley has been around since 1892, Solihull was formed in 2007 through the merger of 2 clubs.

The Premiere League looks like it could be moving towards a salary cap. Interesting to see how that would work if other leagues don't follow suit ... especially La Liga, who would never do anything to hamstring their two big clubs' ability to spend money they don't really have.

The Championship wrapped up today and Ipswich Town grabbed the 2nd automatic promotion spot and will play in the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. It’s back to back promotions for them. Leeds, Southampton, West Brom and Norwich are in the playoffs. At the foot, Birmingham City were relegated and will play in League One for the first time in 29 years. Huddersfield and Rotherham were also relegated. Birmingham City were 6th in the table when manager John Eustace was sacked in October. Wayne Rooney replaced him and was sacked in January after winning 2 of 15 matches and sending them to 20th.

I don't actually care about Birmingham city since they aren't cross town from me and I've never met a blues fan. It is hilarious though how badly their ownership fucked up. Not one decision was based on football (unless you're talking about american football bringing in Tom Brady). Every decision seemed to be made by a marketing person. If I were a Birmingham fan, I would be livid with the teams ownership and rightfully so.
