2023-24 Premier League Thread

Thanks to daylights savings time and lethargy, I've never been happier to sleep through a game in my life. Definitely never going to watch that replay or any analysis of the match.

You’d probably enjoy the first half tbh….was a solid half of football.

Once they kicked off the second half the wheels came off tho, obviously.

My dog isn’t up before the ass crack of dawn like his predecessor, so I’m not getting out of bed before Rebecca Lowe and team come on the air.

Brentford vs Burnley first half has been the wildest comedy of errors and insanity I can think of in a 1-0 match between a team definitely getting relegated and one possibly getting relegated. Not sure how the rest of the match will go, but at least check out the highlights for sure.

I got my early entertainment from the FA Cup match between Wolves and Coventry. The Sky Blues got 2 2nd half stoppage time goals to come back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 and head to the semifinals for the first time since 1987. The winner was scored by USMNT forward Haji Wright, who also was critical in the build up to the tying goal.

The league assessed a 4 point deduction to Nottingham Forest for breach of financial regulations. That puts them in the drop zone, 18th on 21 points, 1 behind Luton. The expected 2nd deduction for Everton hasn’t been announced yet.

Hoo boy, they better absolutely hammer City when they finally get down to their final judgement. Otherwise there's gonna be hell to pay

Leicester City, come on down! You’re the next club facing a points deduction. The league referred them an independent commission for breach of financial regulations in the 3 year period ending last season, in which they were relegated. But this one is dicey. The Premier League hasn’t seen the last submission but they were submitted to the Football League. The club’s position is that they don’t have to share the accounting with the league because they’re not in the Premier League. They believe it’s unclear which of the Premier League or Football League has jurisdiction.

However, the EFL believes there was a breach and want to deal with the issue this season too. Leicester are currently in an automatic promotion spot in the Championship standings, behind a Leeds on goal differential but onky 1 point ahead of 3rd place Ipswich Town. Those 3 have broken way from the others, with Ipswich 8 points ahead of Southampton, who are 7 points ahead of West Brom. So a points deduction won’t necessarily see their position harmed that much, but it will knock them out of the automatic promotion and into the playoffs.

Weren't they part of the lawsuit against Everton? Something something glass houses.

It's very clear that we were all sold a false bill of goods on what FFP would be. It was sold as just preventing owners from leveraging debt on the clubs themselves and preventing things like Portsmouth almost disappearing as a club. In actuality like all things, it's just a thing to protect the interests of the big clubs.

Man ... everybody in the top two divisions in England lives in a glass house of one kind or another. And I think the powers that be actually tried to do a good thing with FFP. They just missed the mark with the details and don't have the institutional strength to manage the process equally for everyone.

I specifically remember it being reported that owners spending their own money directly and not as "loans" to the club as it was often structured would not count against FFP. If this was one source reporting this incorrectly and others copying it or if it was deliberate misinformation that was put out there at the time ease concerns I don't know, but I do know that nobody from any governing bodies corrected this misinformation.

In other news: the sun rose in the east, Boston has drastically different weather than it did two days ago, and Matty Cash got injured on international duty. Seriously, every damn time.

Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali is already under suspension for gambling related charges levied by the Italian FA. He's now been charged by the England FA for betting offenses that took place after his transfer to Newcastle, after the period covered by the Italian ban. He's been able to train with Newcastle but can’t play until the suspension is over in August, but this new charge puts next season in doubt too.

I have a lot of sympathy for Tonali and Toney. It's an addiction, and one that's encouraged by all the sponsors of the sport they play, plus my understanding is that gambling has long been part of the culture for soccer players. Young players hung out with the older players and are introduced to it. I think the biggest difference is that due to the ease of just using an app on your phone making it almost no different than playing candy crush, it's just so much easier to feed that addiction. People are acting like the players gambling might effect decisions they make on the field or that players are match fixing or something crazy like that when in actuality, I don't think the players really connect the two mentally.

Also, the wording is a little confusing, but all it's saying is he continued to gamble while playing for Newcastle before the charges and suspension. That's the least shocking thing on earth. He had an addiction that was not addressed, he isn't going to magically stop just because he moved to a new country. If I'm an alcoholic and I move to a different city and make no other changes, I'm not magically going to stop being an alcoholic.

Because soccer is different than American sports in that each club is basically it's own entity, there's no central regulation for how young players are structured. In the NBA, the entire rookie class gets help with helping set them up for the fact that they're about to become rich and famous at a very young age and how to navigate that. I'm sure some clubs have better programs than others for their youth academies, but there's no central body for it and I'm sure at most clubs, young players just learn how to behave by watching older players.

It happened here too, just on a smaller scale. Shane Pinto was suspended for half the hockey season for what were apparently strawman bets, since he was in Canada and couldn’t access the US betting sites. And the Raptors Jontay Porter is under investigation. But with the proliferation of online gambling, it’s just a matter of time.
