2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Yeah because Serge Savard was great at it, see weekend motel gangbanging of 14-year olds, or Gainey’s “worst day in Habs history”
Insulating hockey players from trouble, especially when they are looking for it, will always be a problem.

No excuses to not develop players properly however. Despite our legendary 1st round picks issues, our farm system used to crank out players like a well oiled machine.

Habs had the GOAT development guru (Claude Ruel) till 93 Cup, yet were only able to develop a couple top line non goalie players (Richer & Lemieux) from post Gainey pick in 1973 draft - Naslund & Chelios were developed in Sweden & NCAA

Farm system only “cranked out” complementary 3rd & 4th line talent.

Further to player development, with Adam Nicholas in the fold, Habs likely have this generations best development guru, and definitely the best the orgs had since Ruel retired 30-years ago

Obviously we were missing on top line talent but the quality of role players was really good, and you forgot some talent too in Desjardins, Schneider, Corson, Leclair, Lebeau, Koivu. And some others that found their glory years elsewhere like Cassels, Conroy, Tucker.

Always been hard to develop top 6 forwards though. Since Shutt there’s been what: Richer, Lemieux, Corson (somewhat), Leclair (but mostly elsewhere), Koivu, Savage (October), Ribeiro (traded early), Plekanec, K-Bros (which didn’t turned out well), Max (one of the best in retrospect) , Gally, Chucky (flamed out quickly), and now Caufield.

Is that the alleged Quebec City incident that was not reported in the Montreal press but got lots of ink in Quebec City? Because I don't know what, if anything, ever came of that. I don't think anything was proven and no one was charged.

That I do not recall. I only recall an incident that allegedly happened in Quebec City in 1987 and one curious name I recall reading was Brian Hayward.
Yeah that was the famous one during the payoff series against them. No charges filed, the girls told them they were of the age of consent, and yeah, it was weird hearing Cornell man Hayward’s name associated with that incident.

J de Mtl had it on front page (surprise!), even Red Fisher who never ever addressed National Enquirer type subjects crucified Serge Savard on his Sat editorial section saying the “GM needs to start focusing on his job of ensuring young players are properly conducting themselves as Mtl
Canadiens”..
