2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Tripp is our village idiot, he’s lovable, his heart is in the right place and he has battled some demons with the bottle but the guy really has the team in his heart and his soul, spoke to him in the past at a couple of events and the guy is dedicated and entrenched in the org. He has grown on me over the years!!!

Bottom line ... as NHL color guys go, Tripp is absolutely in line with the average. He's a dingbat, but there are much sillier guys. He's a bit of a blowhard and a name dropper, but there are much worse out there. He's fine. Mike isn't great and he's certainly not a natural doing play by play, but he's also probably in the middle of the pack. There are some REALLY bad broadcasts in the NHL, many of them in traditional markets. Carolina's is not one of them.

I will say our broadcast is very consistent from game to game. Some might say consistently mediocre, but I've grown to enjoy it. I was especially grateful to be able to sync up the internet radio broadcast with the playoff tv feed this past season to avoid the national coverage which is usually insufferably negative on the Canes and a real buzzkill.

Tripp has come a long way from his constant food and groin injury references, and offers occasional good game analysis these days. Maniscalco is so-so, but he also had to replace a hall of fame announcer in Forslund - so the difference is a bit more pronounced. I really like Shane's contributions and wish they would find more ways to use him, and Hannah has been a great improvement over what we've had in the past. The best part for me is that they all seem to like one another and share a welcoming camaraderie. They may not be collectively the best in the league, but I personally feel they're much higher than 22nd.
You're still down as a new member, I don't recognize your handle, so... Welcome. Even if somewhere in the past I already said that because I'm getting old and all that stuff.

Shane and Tripp were brutal last year (??) when Maniscalco was out for his father’s death. They purposefully refused to call the game and discussed anything but as it was “too hard.”

I was on a car trip and turned in a few minutes late to the game so I missed the line up announcement. Took me until intermission to figure out Andersen was in goal— despite the saves and scores made— freakin’ brutal. Also brutal, trying to track which Sebastian Aho is playing when our guys are calling the game 🤦🏼‍♀️

To be fair Shane is not a trained media person and especially a play by play man. So I don’t hold that against either of them. Not in either of their wheelhouses. I will say this when Tripp hangs them up I would love to see Shane in the booth. He would be great in tripps role and actually does know how to rein it in while also providing excellent color commentary without the Tripp schtick you all love so much. I think Shane would be a great replacement at some point.

My problem with Mike and Tripp is that listening to them on the radio is an exercise in frustration. For various reasons, I spend a fair amount of time at night in my car so I listen to them yap during gameplay and I seriously have no clue what is happening on the ice. I just pray that I never lose my eyesight with these guys in the booth still: "I'm a huge Caniac and I can tell you about all of the people that Tripp had dinner with, but I have no idea how good or bad the team is."

I will add this, though: when Mike/Tripp are radio only, they do improve quite a bit. Tripp seems to let Mike call the game more. I really wish that there was a way to get them to pretend that they are radio only for every game.

IMO it's not really fair to bust on Shane when he's done game coverage because that obviously ain't his job and he's always just filling in. I understand that State's new-ish play by play guy has done some hockey so maybe they'll have better options moving forward.

Its somewhat jarring to see the Canes only have 3 draft picks now for the 2026 draft:

The lesser of our or Dallas' 1st round pick

Our 6th round pick

Toronto's 6th round pick.

That's it.

Not saying that is the end of the world, but that is sure different...

Given that we have prospects that we'll never use, I expect that will change a lot in the next ten months.

Yeah, I don't like it if I'm honest, because that draft is shaping up to be a VERY good one. They can always jockey into a few picks, but they won't be first or second rounders ... not if Carolina plans to contend. And they do.

Dom Luspellcheck at The Athletic takes a look at the best contracts in the league, noting the players’ value in excess of their cap hit. Jack Hughes is first, Brandon Hagel is 2nd, Seth Jarvis is 3rd. He says that Jarvis’ value derives from his elite defensive play; if his defense were average, his value would match his cap hit. He also says that Jarvis has a real shot at winning a Selke, which is uncommon for a wing. Havel is the same, he put up 90 points and finished in the top 10 in Selke voting.

And no mention of Slavin, who would make $10m + if he hit the market today?
Yeah if Slavin does not have one of the best five value contracts today then I will eat my hat...and I realize this was based on contracts moving forward but even still Slavin has to be there in spades.

This is where Dom LIcantspellhisname models treat Jaccob Slavin as somewhat pedestrian in terms of contract value due to his lack of offensive counting numbers. His model has Slavin's market value at $7.9 million per season, with a +4 offense rating and a +6 Defense rating, so +10 total rating.

To put that in perspective:

Cale Makar is +21 offense and +5 Defense (Market value $14.8 million)
Thomas Harley is +15 offense and +5 Defense (Market value $11.5 million)
Philip Broberg is +4 offense and +9 Defense (Market value +$9.0 million)

Seeing Philip Broberg with a +9 defense rating to Slavin's +6 should be just about all you need to see to realize that Dom's system has flaws.

Yeah, it's not just the counting numbers ... it's got more to do with usage. The guys who you are tasked to defend and the situations in which you start your shifts have a HUGE impact on macro and micro stats and nobody's really got it nailed yet. Dom wrote a piece last summer on how his model works, how it evolves over time and what he sees as its shortcomings. The two glaring areas where his model discounts game impact is defensemen who primarily play a role suppressing the other team's offense (ie Slavin, Faber, Pesce, Gavrikov, McDonagh, that kind of guy) and goalies. He tweaks the model annually and it's getting closer with goalies but I think he's got a blind spot for defensemen with tougher matchup usage. His model is still the best in the biz so far as I can tell, and they ALL have the same issue with stay at home D.

All that said, I've never found too many flaws with the way Dom's models rate forwards (relatively to each other, at least), although again there's some loss of value for usage when players are used in checking situations.

Seth Jarvis is really good defensively.

Seth Jarvis will never win a Selke.
Fair ... although I think he actually might, depending on the how the traditional discount for wingers recedes over time. If it rolls off quickly like the prejudice against defensemen winning the Lady Bing, then I think guys like Stone, Marner and Jarvis will get a pretty big boost in an era with less specialist checking centers.

His honorable mentions are Barkov and 4 dmen; Morrissey, Mikey Anderson, Sanderson and Theodore.
