2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

So, the same team that didn't get the Rangers to retain salary on Trouba managed to send a relatively useful middle pairing guy to St Louis, get nothing but middling futures for him AND retained salary? Honestly, I was joking about Verbeek getting fired for the Trouba deal but this one should get him a pink slip. Also, what's the freaking hurry? You KNOW they'd have gotten more for Fowler closer to the deadline.
Fowler had a 4 team trade list and had to waive his NTC to go to the Blues. So Verbeek didn’t have a lot of flexibility.

Pretty sure he had more flexibility than THAT. We've seen plenty of guys with restricted lists shipped for reasonable deals. Verbeek is on my prove it list after these moves ... as in he needs to prove he's not yet another clueless moron masquerading as a GM. Frankly, the fact that he fleeced Verbeek got Drury off that list

FWIW, he's on a very short list of guys (for me, at least) who could step in behind the Canes bench without the culture really taking a hit ... should Dundon eventually lose that game of chicken he plays with Brindy at the end of every contract.

You know we’re not supposed to rubberneck on the highway after you see a bad accident but I couldn’t help myself last night and watched the third period of the Rangers/Preds game and boy is that ugly on Broadway…Chris Drury looked like he was going to cry after that one and how much leash does Lavi have left?

Meanwhile in Buffalo, they lost their 11th straight game to the hapless Habs…Kevyn Adams must be on his last leg at this point too.

Even with the win, the Preds are still the only team in the league with fewer than 10 wins. They’re tied with the Blackhawks for worst points percentage in the league.

Meanwhile in Buffalo, they’re averaging 81.5% capacity and that includes a near sellout for their game in Prague.

For now, it sounds like Rangers brass are correctly blaming their current malaise on the players. After all, that's the same core group (recently minus Trouba) who openly rebelled on their last two coaches. Admittedly one of those was David Quinn, who couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag, but still ... you only get to pull that stunt twice, apparently. I think they'd happily shoot Kreider and Zibanejad into the sun at this point if they could get sufficient quality back for them.

And I did wonder at the time what exactly Lavi thought he was doing taking that job. He got one truly stellar season out of that roster, to be sure ... but it was never a good fit.

Mika Zibanejad.... 31 Games 6 Goals 15 Assists -17

He has FIVE more seasons after this one with an AAV of $8.5 million and sports a full NMC for the entirety of his contract. And his contract has base salaries of just $1 million per each season with the huge signing bonuses each season, making it pretty much buyout proof.

He is 31 years old...could be just a bad stretch where the funk of the entire team is dragging him down OR he might just be cooked already. Hard to tell. Regardless, Chris Drury's 'agree to a trade or we will waive you and dump you somewhere else anyway' threats won't scare Zibanejad, he is full NMC protected.

-17 is 5th worst in the NHL. Chicago Blackhawks winger Philipp Kurashev is rocking a -27 in 28 games. Roman Josi is 3rd worst in the NHL at -21. Carter Verhaeghe is -18 (on a team where no one else is worse than -8.

For $7 million AAV, in 32 Games, Brady Skjei has 2 Goals 7 Assists -3

Pat Verbeek is holding on line one…

The Rangers traded Kaapo Kakko to Seattle for dman Will Borgen and 2025 3rd and 6th round picks.

Monteal and Nashville swap right shot dmen, Alexandre Carrier to the Habs, Justin Barron to the Preds

A lot of pre Christmas trading going on this season. Quite unusual compared to the previous seasons. It’s not going to happen, but I’d love to dump #82.

The NHL roster freeze starts today and ends on 12/27. Those 8 days are going to make or break everyone’s season.

I think the Canes would still grab a goalie off the waiver wire if one of the vets around the league was being slipped through. There just has not been much of that the past few weeks.

Zibanejad's contract was always a contract designed to be bought out. I honestly don't think anyone involved thought he'd be a $8.5 million player when he was 35 or 36, but I'm pretty sure the team hoped he'd be one past his 31st birthday. I think the trick with him is figuring out how much of his current form is due to him slowing down with age and how much is due to him shutting down mentally because he hates paying for Lavi. Having watched a few Rangers games where he coasts around 90% but throws it into gear with the game on the line, I personally suspect it's more of the latter than the former.

And look, it's worth remembering that the Rangers aren't DOA like the Preds or the Sabres. They're 3 points out of the last wildcard and the teams between them and the playoffs are mostly dreck. Heck, Ottawa's in 8th and they're dreck. And the Jerks are still hard to score against when they play hard. If they can find their work ethic and their transition game, they could be back in the good books so fast it'd make heads spin.

Well, Borgen should actually help the right side of their D a bit, and Kakko was causing problems, so ... have fun in Boringville with Ronnie Franchise. Borgen is a lunch pail guy who shows up to work and keeps his head down. If ever a team badly needed one of those, it's this Rangers squad.
