2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

The Avs also need to figure out what exactly Marty Necas is going forward and how much they are willing to invest in him. Is he a potential 80-100 point guy flying around with MacKinnon and Makar or is he a 60-70 point defensively deficient winger that only puts up points because he is playing with MacKinnon and Makar? Can the Avs get away with Necas playing center if they cannot find another option?

Canes always seemed determined to dodge this Necas contract coming up. Now it's the Avs who get to figure out what to do with pending UFA Necas once the 2025-26 season officially opens.

The Av's might be smart to throw that new extension at him on July 1st before he does go off next season playing alongside McKinnon and gets that 90-100 points you mentioned and then wants even more dough...so what does Necas get this summer vs next??? I cannot see Marty and the agent settling for anything that starts with a 7...so upwards of $8 to $9 million this summer or perhaps $9-$10 million next summer with a big offensive year. Canes were not going to give him that but the Av's have no choice now.

Because he was the key piece in return for Rants, expect them to overpay on potential
Yes, but also ... I'm not so sure. Marty popped off for 83 points in 79 games this year. I know we've all be waiting for him to take that step, and he did. I honestly don't think he's got anything left in the tank to give beyond that. He was always a potential 80 point guy, now he's actually an 80 point guy, but he's still got the same quirks and limitations and he still gets real perimeter oriented in the playoffs. I'm sure Necas will demand a big contract. Like Makar money big, maybe more. I'm not sure Colorado wants to go there, and I'm also not sure Colorado wants another drama-filled negotiation after the Rantanen mess. This is more than just a gamble on Necas' career arc. They literally cannot afford to get this one wrong.

And as good as he can be and as fun as he is to watch, I'm happy that Necas is somebody else's problem at this point.

The Kings whacked VP/GM Rob Blake. Since becoming the GM in 2017, the Kings made the playoffs in 5 of his 8 seasons but never advanced out of the 1st round. They averaged almost 102 points the last 4 years.

I think Blake hit his ceiling as GM. He was WAY better than I thought he'd be and did a perfectly respectable job for the Kings. He won't have trouble getting another job if he wants. That said, I think he was kind of out of ideas and somebody had to pay for the way they blew a series lead this season. Heller did a great job in the regular season, so it would have been a stretch to axe him because of that stupid challenge he lost that cost the Kings deeply in what turned out to be the turning point of the series. But the GM who seems be kind of stuck? Yeah, he can go.

Interesting. Everybody seemed to be assuming he was in play for an NHL job this summer. He's won the NCAAs twice now and went to the Frozen Four two additional times. But he never played in the NHL and that might not be the guy's career goal the way it is for most coaches. There's a lot more job security in a college job, for sure. Or maybe he's holding out for a better situation than what's on offer this summer. Most open NHL jobs come with a fair amount of caveats, after all.

And it’s not like other successful college coaches have had a lot of success in the NHL. Dave Hakstol and David Quinn immediately come to mind. Jim Montgomery is in his 3rd job. Badger Bob Johnson did OK but that was a long time ago.

Montgomery has been quite successful* though, and he's Carle's mentor. But Montgomery's experiences might be a factor in Carle staying put in college. He hasn't exactly had a smooth ride despite being one of the more highly respected coaches in the NHL.

*discounting for his stint in alcohol rehab poisoning the well for him in Dallas and Boston getting rid of him for moronic and ultimately futile reasons this season. He got a mediocre Blues team cooking really quickly, and on a 105 point pace if he had been with them the whole season. He might be one of the best technicians in the NHL.

League will do nothing its "legal"

I’m gonna say something that might be an unpopular opinion… Or maybe not I don’t know. But, yes, it was an elbow to the head he should be penalized… but even live it was not a hard hit, and there’s no way that a goalie wearing that helmet getting hit with that elbow is gonna have some kind of concussion orc real injury unless his head is made of polyester. It reminds me of the Anderson play, while yes it should’ve been a penalty. I saw nothing in the hit or where his head hit into the netting that would cause some kind of long-term injury like he sat out… except with Freddie. I can see the angle that his neck bent of him, having some kind of whiplash type of injury, but not a concussion. I also realize I never put him in concussion protocol so more than likely that was his issue But, it did not look particularly violent… Like not at all. I’m wondering if they’re told to play up the injuries to try and get them called more… I don’t know, but I’ve seen several of these where they are definitely penalties but injuries that take them off the ice no way. My three-year-old hit me harder than that with wiffle balls in the backyard.

🤷🏻‍♂️
