The Av's might be smart to throw that new extension at him on July 1st before he does go off next season playing alongside McKinnon and gets that 90-100 points you mentioned and then wants even more dough...so what does Necas get this summer vs next??? I cannot see Marty and the agent settling for anything that starts with a 7...so upwards of $8 to $9 million this summer or perhaps $9-$10 million next summer with a big offensive year. Canes were not going to give him that but the Av's have no choice now.The Avs also need to figure out what exactly Marty Necas is going forward and how much they are willing to invest in him. Is he a potential 80-100 point guy flying around with MacKinnon and Makar or is he a 60-70 point defensively deficient winger that only puts up points because he is playing with MacKinnon and Makar? Can the Avs get away with Necas playing center if they cannot find another option?
Canes always seemed determined to dodge this Necas contract coming up. Now it's the Avs who get to figure out what to do with pending UFA Necas once the 2025-26 season officially opens.
Yes, but also ... I'm not so sure. Marty popped off for 83 points in 79 games this year. I know we've all be waiting for him to take that step, and he did. I honestly don't think he's got anything left in the tank to give beyond that. He was always a potential 80 point guy, now he's actually an 80 point guy, but he's still got the same quirks and limitations and he still gets real perimeter oriented in the playoffs. I'm sure Necas will demand a big contract. Like Makar money big, maybe more. I'm not sure Colorado wants to go there, and I'm also not sure Colorado wants another drama-filled negotiation after the Rantanen mess. This is more than just a gamble on Necas' career arc. They literally cannot afford to get this one wrong.Because he was the key piece in return for Rants, expect them to overpay on potential
And it’s not like other successful college coaches have had a lot of success in the NHL. Dave Hakstol and David Quinn immediately come to mind. Jim Montgomery is in his 3rd job. Badger Bob Johnson did OK but that was a long time ago.Interesting. Everybody seemed to be assuming he was in play for an NHL job this summer. He's won the NCAAs twice now and went to the Frozen Four two additional times. But he never played in the NHL and that might not be the guy's career goal the way it is for most coaches. There's a lot more job security in a college job, for sure. Or maybe he's holding out for a better situation than what's on offer this summer. Most open NHL jobs come with a fair amount of caveats, after all.
