2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

I’m gonna say something that might be an unpopular opinion… Or maybe not I don’t know. But, yes, it was an elbow to the head he should be penalized… but even live it was not a hard hit, and there’s no way that a goalie wearing that helmet getting hit with that elbow is gonna have some kind of concussion orc real injury unless his head is made of polyester. It reminds me of the Anderson play, while yes it should’ve been a penalty. I saw nothing in the hit or where his head hit into the netting that would cause some kind of long-term injury like he sat out… except with Freddie. I can see the angle that his neck bent of him, having some kind of whiplash type of injury, but not a concussion. I also realize I never put him in concussion protocol so more than likely that was his issue But, it did not look particularly violent… Like not at all. I’m wondering if they’re told to play up the injuries to try and get them called more… I don’t know, but I’ve seen several of these where they are definitely penalties but injuries that take them off the ice no way. My three-year-old hit me harder than that with wiffle balls in the backyard.

🤷🏻‍♂️

A hit to the head is a hit to the head. You just never know the severity of the hit until sometimes it's too late.

If I ran the NHL, all hits to the head, regardless of intent, would be called a penalty. Review the play if necessary and reverse the call if warranted. You want to stamp out head shots? Be like the NFL and call all head shots as a penalty. Players need to adjust. It'll "soften" the game? I don't care.

Like I said I agree with the penalties 100%. It’s just some of these hits are fairly benign and these guys are laid out….A guy brushes up against the goalie wearing a helmet and he lays out like he got shot. Reminds me of soccer sometimes. But any hits to the head, whether the shoulder, elbow, or a damn ankle should definitely be a penalty. Stay away from the head. If he legit got a head injury from that then I’ll back off my statement. Just didn’t look like a hit that would injure someone.

That's the crazy thing about blows to the head. It doesn't have to be a hard hit, as it can be any sort of hit that will ring that bell. Also, helmet or not, a pro hockey player coming in on skates probably doesn't require much force to cause a brain injury. We not talking fluffy stay puft marshmallow dudes like me that are creating the head shots here.

Strong disagree here.

As a 10+ year EMS vet it's not just about how hard you're hit; it' where, it's the angle, it's the time of contact, etc. There are a lot of factors that play into injuries aside from sheer newtons of force - it's how I've seen a 3 year old break a grown woman's collarbone as one example.

The fact he started throwing up on the bench and was stretchered out says a lot. A concussion doesn't need a ton of force, if the brain starts to swell all kinds of bad things happen.

In law, the Egg Shell Skull Rule counsels that when you tortiously wrong someone, you are responsible for all the damage you cause even if the person you injured was unusually sensitive to the type of harm you caused and the damage significantly exceeded what would have been caused to an average person.

I agree that what Bennett did did not look particularly forceful. But It also did not look particularly accidental.

Yeah, it wasn't the most violent elbow/forearm to the head you're ever going to see but Bennett clearly made contact with the side of Stolarz' head without being pushed into him. For me, that HAS to be called, regardless of results. Watching it live, it was so innocuous looking that I thought Stolarz had teabagged himself on the post, so I'm assuming the refs didn't process it as a violent hit in the moment either. It's just unfortunate, but if I was a Leafs fan I'd be incandescently angry right now.

That said, Toronto bears some burden here as I was basically screaming for them to evaluate the guy earlier when he took that shot puck to the face. When a guy reacts like that, you've GOT to prioritize his health and have the Docs check him out.

The fish sticks make the most of that 3.5% chance and get the #1 pick.
If any of the longer shots was gonna get the ping pong ball luck, I'm kinda glad is was the Isles. Lou left them so Cap locked that a big win in the draft is about the only way they're going to be able to make any quick progress towards being watchable. Shame for them that it's not the kind of draft with an iconic player at the top of the draft pool. Still, they'll get a good prospect ... which will bring their total up to 1 in their system.

I get it. I’m a paramedic too, but whatever. In this particular case, he was barely touched, I’ll just keep my comments to myself on this issue. I hope he survives this injury.

Please don’t.

Well, I try not to rock the boat. We all have our opinions that just happens to be mine in that particular case I didn’t think he was hit very hard or at an odd angle. I can see Freddy because the way his neck went into the netting it meant awkwardly I could see him getting a whiplash type of injury.

I get that argument, for sure. But I still think that has to be goalie interference on Bennett, even if it's not elevated from there due to the injury. He wasn't impeded, wasn't pushed, and wasn;t particularly tracking the puck (even though it was in the general vicinity). He skated directly into contact with the goalie AND made a specific effort to kick his goalie stick away. That's textbook interference and HAS to be called. From there, it's Opinionville.

The international rule for head contact, whether intentional or not, is a 2 minute minor and 10 minute misconduct. The penalties ramp up from there depending on whether the ref sees malicious intent. If players start sitting for 12 minutes, maybe that will change the conduct. but if they’re going to continue to be unpenalized, they’re going to keep happening.

I'm sure we've both seen serious injuries arise from rather mundane sources - mechanism of injury and all that. But once the guy starts throwing up etc if that happened in the back of the truck it definitely raises concern.

I see no reason why anyone here should censor themselves for potentially unpopular opinions; how else do we grow?

I mean, I know nothing about Taylor Swift so there. ;)

Well, they may replace one fossil with another. Arthur Staple tweeted that Ken Holland is the front runner. The Isles have also asked Montreal for permission to interview Jeff Gorton.

Montreal says no to that request, almost certainly ... unless Gorton wants out for some reason. He's done a really good job in Montreal IMO. Otherwise that list looks a lot like a NY media wishlist. Staple is a decent reporter so he may have some actual info, but ...

I do know that Bergevin has been manifesting a job in LA since he got fired in Montreal. Not saying they hire him, but he's definitely going to chase it. Why on God's earth anyone would hire Kekalainen or Chiarelli after the messes they've made over the years is beyond me. Other than that this league is VERY stupid when it comes to hiring executives.

I've never had a problem with the International rule. I'm not sure it makes things all that much better in the grand scheme of things, but it does have a deterrent effect on drive-by head shots. The lack of discretion is a big deal as well. Your moronic refs aren't making nearly as many judgement calls with the International rules. IMO the NHL has a massive problem with being too lenient on what is and isn't a hit to the head, and that would also potentially shine some light on that as well.

Bottom line, at least for me, is that the NHL has always institutionally fallen all over themselves to find reasons not to penalize and/or punish guys for borderline hits. Until that changes, nothing they do will matter all that much.
