There are reasons Boxing doesn't allow hits to the back of the head.
I’m gonna say something that might be an unpopular opinion… Or maybe not I don’t know. But, yes, it was an elbow to the head he should be penalized… but even live it was not a hard hit, and there’s no way that a goalie wearing that helmet getting hit with that elbow is gonna have some kind of concussion orc real injury unless his head is made of polyester. It reminds me of the Anderson play, while yes it should’ve been a penalty. I saw nothing in the hit or where his head hit into the netting that would cause some kind of long-term injury like he sat out… except with Freddie. I can see the angle that his neck bent of him, having some kind of whiplash type of injury, but not a concussion. I also realize I never put him in concussion protocol so more than likely that was his issue But, it did not look particularly violent… Like not at all. I’m wondering if they’re told to play up the injuries to try and get them called more… I don’t know, but I’ve seen several of these where they are definitely penalties but injuries that take them off the ice no way. My three-year-old hit me harder than that with wiffle balls in the backyard.

A hit to the head is a hit to the head. You just never know the severity of the hit until sometimes it's too late.
If I ran the NHL, all hits to the head, regardless of intent, would be called a penalty. Review the play if necessary and reverse the call if warranted. You want to stamp out head shots? Be like the NFL and call all head shots as a penalty. Players need to adjust. It'll "soften" the game? I don't care.

Strong disagree here.I’m gonna say something that might be an unpopular opinion… Or maybe not I don’t know. If any of the longer shots was gonna get the ping pong ball luck, I'm kinda glad is was the Isles. Lou left them so Cap locked that a big win in the draft is about the only way they're going to be able to make any quick progress towards being watchable. Shame for them that it's not the kind of draft with an iconic player at the top of the draft pool. Still, they'll get a good prospect ... which will bring their total up to 1 in their system. The fish sticks make the most of that 3.5% chance and get the #1 pick.
Strong disagree here.
As a 10+ year EMS vet it's not just about how hard you're hit; it' where, it's the angle, it's the time of contact, etc. There are a lot of factors that play into injuries aside from sheer newtons of force - it's how I've seen a 3 year old break a grown woman's collarbone as one example.
The fact he started throwing up on the bench and was stretchered out says a lot. A concussion doesn't need a ton of force, if the brain starts to swell all kinds of bad things happen.
Please don’t.I’ll just keep my comments to myself on this issue.
Please don’t.
I'm sure we've both seen serious injuries arise from rather mundane sources - mechanism of injury and all that. But once the guy starts throwing up etc if that happened in the back of the truck it definitely raises concern.I get it. I’m a paramedic too, but whatever. In this particular case, he was barely touched, I’ll just keep my comments to myself on this issue. I hope he survives this injury.
Well, they may replace one fossil with another. Arthur Staple tweeted that Ken Holland is the front runner. The Isles have also asked Montreal for permission to interview Jeff Gorton. If any of the longer shots was gonna get the ping pong ball luck, I'm kinda glad is was the Isles. I've never had a problem with the International rule. I'm not sure it makes things all that much better in the grand scheme of things, but it does have a deterrent effect on drive-by head shots. The lack of discretion is a big deal as well. Your moronic refs aren't making nearly as many judgement calls with the International rules. IMO the NHL has a massive problem with being too lenient on what is and isn't a hit to the head, and that would also potentially shine some light on that as well. The international rule for head contact, whether intentional or not, is a 2 minute minor and 10 minute misconduct. The penalties ramp up from there depending on whether the ref sees malicious intent. If players start sitting for 12 minutes, maybe that will change the conduct. but if they’re going to continue to be unpenalized, they’re going to keep happening.
